Shoutout to IIDA Mid-America for hosting Sites + Sips at Blue Surf Bay! Our team had a fantastic time touring with our partners at SFS Architecture and others who helped create this completed project in Blue Springs, MO. Blue Surf Bay made its debut this summer and it was such a colorful and creative place to furnish! We are happy to see the community enjoying the new waterpark and amenities.

SFS Architecture honors all of those impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. The Overland Park 9/11 Memorial seeks to honor those fallen First Responders and the thousands of other victims that lost their lives as the result of the terrorist attacks against the United States. It also seeks to relate the enormity of the events that unfolded that day to generations yet to come. #NeverForget

Today, we celebrate the topping out of the new Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment! The celebration ceremony included remarks from Director Dr. Connie Brooks and the signing of the final steel beam to be placed on top of the new facility. SFS provided complete design services for a 75,000 square foot building to comprehensively house all aspects of the Thompson Center in a single facility designed specifically for their needs to ensure the best possible outcome for each child and family they serve. The new facility, located on the South Providence Medical Park campus in Columbia, Missouri, will expand clinical and research space,?develop new spaces for observation to enhance research opportunities and provide integrated training space. Laura Burkhalter, Interior Designer and Senior Associate, was recognized last week as Kansas City Councilman Eric Bunch’s 816 Day Community Champion. Laura has spent many years volunteering as a neighborhood leader and advocating for the Southmoreland neighborhood and the larger community of Midtown, historic preservation, public transit, better infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, the Kansas City area interior design community, and more. Congratulations, Laura! Thank you for enriching our community through your work at SFS and beyond.

Check out the article on the City of Overland Park's Maple Hills Park in the Kansas Government Journal! SFS designed a new restroom facility and shelter building to replace the deteriorated structures at Maple Hills Park. The new structures are unique to Maple Hills Park, are more functional for visitors and park staff, and more secure. Two unique features of the design are the use of cross-laminated timber panels on the shelter and passive sustainable design strategies of the restroom that allow the two to use solar renewable energy. The City of Overland Park will break ground on Bietigheim-Bissingen Park this Friday, August 9. SFS is leading the design team in the development of the new sister-city park, situated on approximately 6.5 acres at the northeast corner of 159th and Quivira Streets. Based on the outcome of a community and neighborhood engagement process to understand concerns and determine priority amenities, this new public park will include a shelter, restroom, playground, bocce ball court, reading nook, open lawn space, elevated boardwalk, gazebo, and a small parking lot. The German architectural style, city planning, integration of art, and the relationship to the water that is prevalent in Bietigheim-Bissingen will have a strong influence in the design and layout of the park. As part of a design team led by SWT design, SFS provided a Preliminary Space Program for a new 10,300 square foot wedding and event venue in Dryden Park. With a potential capacity of 300 guests, the program includes an event space/hearth room with pre-function space, a full kitchen, office, restrooms, mother's room, two separate wedding party suites, and storage space. Outdoor spaces include a private terrace, outdoor ceremony space, firepit and "Jewel Box" / Greenhouse. We are honored to be apart of the planning for this exciting project! Principal and preservation architect Dana Gould, AIA, LEED AP, will co-present “Deep Dive – Bringing Down the Barriers on Historic Preservation” at Missouri’s Premier Downtown Revitalization Conference on Tuesday, July 30th in Kansas City, Missouri. The exposé will identify and discuss the benefits historic preservation can bring to a community, unlock the mysteries of National Register designation, and demystify the historic tax credit process. Hosted by Missouri Main Street, the event will explore opportunities to build community, foster entrepreneurs and boost local economies while preserving and promoting the culture of Missouri downtowns and districts.
