Enhancing the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment.
关于我们
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) established the SFPE Educational and Scientific Foundation (SFPE Foundation, or Foundation) in 1979. The SFPE Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the United States of America in the state of Massachusetts. Our mission is to enhance the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment. We do this by facilitating scientific and engineering research focused on fire risk, safety, mitigation, control and human response. We also facilitate the development of engineering methods to mitigate the adverse consequences of unwanted fires, and we provide educational and research opportunities for the next generation of fire protection engineers. With the support of individual, chapter, and corporate donors, as well as external partners, we provide awards, scholarships, grants, and educational programs. Some of our featured programs include: **Funding major research projects that address critical gaps in fire engineering knowledge as identified in the SFPE Research Roadmap. **Student Research Grants - twice-annual grants to global fire protection engineering/fire science students conducting research on innovative fire protection engineering topics. **Awards and Scholarships – annual awards in honor of Jack Bono, Arthur Guise, Frederick Mowrer, and Dr. Guylène Proulx to recognize unique contributions to the profession and to support the next generation of fire engineering students.

We’re excited to welcome Lisa VanBuskirk, PE, CDR USCGR (retired) as the new SFPE Foundation Program Manager for WUI Initiatives. Lisa will be taking on the Foundation’s growing wildland-urban interface programs, including grants management, partnership-building, program evaluation and reporting, events coordination, and training oversight. Lisa is a licensed Fire Protection Engineer and a graduate of the FPE program at the University of Maryland whose prior experience includes working on fire safety design projects around the world and serving as an Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) with the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center. More recently, she’s been working in grants management and outreach with the AARP Community Challenge Grant Program, where her experience includes tracking and managing grants and grantee reporting processes, developing public education campaigns that utilize webinars and live stream broadcasts, and volunteer engagement.

We love to see the real world impact of FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety Grants! This course started with a 2021 FP&S grant that funded its development and testing. Now a 2023 FP&S grant is allowing us to develop a follow-up course! Learn more on our Ongoing Research page https://lnkd.in/gTxfgAiz
Jamie McAllister of Halliwell Fire Research leading a completely full class on the basics of WUI Risk Assessment & Mitigation for the Fire Service at #EduCode2025. This 8-hour course is the product of hundreds of hours of consulting and volunteer input from fire protection engineering, fire service, and related communities over the last several years. It draws on open-access case studies and research from the fire protection engineering community, like the Camp Fire Case Study produced by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is what you see featured in the slide in this image. This critical educational content helps empower first responders, code officials, plan reviewers, fire marshals, and many others to better protect and prepare their communities in the face of growing wildland-urban interface fire risks. It wouldn’t have been possible to create this course—and help bridge the fire service and fire engineering communities—without funding received by the SFPE Foundation from the FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety Grant program. These programs are essential to making sure the people who protect our communities have the knowledge and resources needed to do so. We’re proud to be able to work with the outstanding people at USFA, National Fire Academy and the International Code Council to bring this training to as many fire service and related beneficiaries as possible. Look out for future deliveries of this course near you, featuring our other co-lead instructors, Jennifer Hoyt, P.E. and @Jeremy Souza from Code Red Consultants.
