When San Franciscans voted to establish the Dignity Fund in 2016, we made history. Thanks to the efforts of tireless community advocates and visionary City leaders, San Francisco became the first major city in the United States to create a dedicated local resource to fund social services for older people and adults with disabilities at this scale. Now, as we conclude our first planning and funding cycle since the Dignity Fund’s passage, we’re proud to share the Cycle-End Evaluation. Together with our staff and partners, we invested in strategies to address the digital divide and boost social connection for older adults and people with disabilities, expanded existing programs and launched new services for LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals, and laid the foundations to implement the nation’s first municipally funded Disability Cultural Center. This year, our Adult Protective Services team responded to over 9,000 reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self-neglect. Not only is the need for APS services growing, but so is the complexity of the cases that our social workers are investigating. An example of this are financial scams targeting older adults. A recent Bloomberg article delves deeper into the complexity of resolving financial scams, “When someone is tricked into wiring money to a criminal, authorities typically have about 72 hours to intervene before it disappears. If a bank notifies social workers, that window may close before they can enlist law enforcement.” As Akiles Ceron shared, “Prompt reporting to law enforcement would be most helpful.” Read more by visiting: https://bloom.bg/4gP7ctP
Our Disaster Preparedness and Response Unit seeks experienced emergency managers with a proven track record of developing and implementing mass care and shelter plans. The Mass Care Coordinator ensures that displaced people are cared for during disasters and other emergencies What You’ll Do: -Develop comprehensive care and shelter emergency plans, policies, and operational processes. -Serve as the mass care and shelter liaison to other city departments, public safety agencies, community groups, private organizations, and the public, coordinating activities with each. -Develop training and exercise opportunities; guide City staff on mass care and shelter, including roles and responsibilities during the activation of mass care operations.
