Missed IDEO's Climate Week event earlier this year and curious to hear what interesting opportunities arise when climate intersects with money, play, emotion, AI, and biodiversity? Never fear! Get a taste of the evening with thought-provoking presentations from some of my favorite IDEOers: - John Won talks climate finance with guest speakers Lizzy Kolar of Scope Zero and Angelo Paolo Kalaw of Celo Foundation - Savannah Kunovsky elicits an apple, a heartbeat and a parrot to provoke thoughts around what it means to design a future we're excited about in an age of rapidly changing technology - Natalia Vasquez welcomes VC Tom Quigley of Superorganism to speak about investment in biodiversity and Carly Williams and Albert Shum of TEALEAVES to share their principles for biodiversity positive design - Nazlican Goksu explores how our deepest, darkest emotions – lust, greed and laziness – can serve us well in the pursuit of climate-friendly solutions And I, of course, could not miss the opportunity to bring play into the conversation, as my preferred mindset for taking on climate challenges and turning them into the most exciting opportunities for creativity and invention. All here for your viewing pleasure: https://lnkd.in/gTTusgdT #climate #money #play #emotion #AI #biodiversity #IDEO

Great tips and resources for breaking into climate tech (and other climate work) thanks to Gigascale Capital.
You don’t need a PhD in rocket science to work in climate tech. We promise. ?? Interested in climate tech but not sure if your skills fit? Don’t worry, you're not alone! The good news is there are plenty of opportunities for all kinds of skill sets. Your unique perspective will bring huge value to climate companies. During SF Climate Week, we hosted a panel on "Forging Your Path in Climate Tech" with industry experts who have all made the switch. Here are their top takeaways: 1?? Identify Your Strongest Skill Sets Reflect on the skills you’ve developed and how they support the job you want next.?Then dive into companies and roles that align with you (not the other way around). Sites like Climatebase are incredibly useful for this. 2?? Network Your Way In Climate tech companies are seeking curious minds. Don’t hesitate to reach out to companies even if they don't have open roles. Also, comb through your LinkedIn contacts—you might be surprised to see who has transitioned to climate tech since you last worked with them. 3?? Bring Curiosity to Interviews and Conversations Show your enthusiasm for the space by engaging, asking questions, and getting their take on things. Don’t be shy—get curious about their space! Sparking these big conversations is a great way to prove your passion. Working in climate tech is incredibly inspiring and a great way to combat “climate anxiety.” The innovation and growth opportunities are endless, and nothing feels better than contributing to meaningful change. Thanks to Natalie K. (Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer, CO280), Alicia Harmon O’Meara (COO, Arbor), Selina Tobaccowala (CEO and Co-Founder, HomeBoost, and Jill Macri (Founding Partner, Growth by Design Talent) for their insights. If you’re already working in climate tech or are further along in your career switch, what useful resources, communities, or people have helped you find your way? Share your insights in the comments! #climatetech #careergrowth #climateaction #GigascaleCapital #careeradvice #jobsearch #hiring

?? The SF Climate Week is Out of This World! A few weeks ago, I attended SF Climate Week with Adan Ramirez on behalf of everyone at Greenfluidics. The impressions I carry are overwhelmingly positive. The climate tech ecosystem in Latin America is growing rapidly. I reconnected with Gabriela Carrasco, who, along with Reciprocal, hosted fantastic events focused on the Latin American ecosystem and the rising investment opportunities in the region. The Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco is also making great strides in supporting Mexican entrepreneurs. It was a pleasure to meet Ursula Rojas Weiser, who has many amazing experiences to share and is always eager to help. I would need several posts to mention all the incredible people I met, but here are a few making a significant impact in the climate tech ecosystem: Alicia Hernández Arriaga, Daniel Gajardo, Waldo Soto Bruna, Cristobal Sanchez, Gabriel Estrada Escalante, Tamara L Diamond, LEED Green Associate, Justin Hardin, Andres ?? Friedman, Benjamin Zehr, Guillermo Repizo, PhD, Matthew Joehnk and Mauricio Kremer #ClimateTech #SustainableFuture #Greenfluidics #SFClimateWeek #LatamClimateTech #Innovation #Sustainability #Networking

? SF Climate Week is not a conference ? It is 100x better than a conference. It's more like the urban-techy Burning Man of climate (think: more networking & clothing, less music & drugs). An ecosystem of 350 diverse events was built out of nothing, led by Climatebase and grassroots organized by a coalition of over 750 organizations. 15,000 people attended (many from outside the Bay) to frolic around SF and revel in climate solutions. Notably, it was far more accessible than Burning Man, nearly all events were free! A local attendee could have feasibly gotten through the week without exchanging money (in fact, I ate dinner at events all week!). I was blown away by the quality of all the events I attended– each one was totally unique and embodied the organizers. Despite the massive list of events, most of them were filled to capacity within days of being listed (sign up early and remove yourself if you can't attend!). It may have been my first SF Climate Week, but I went hard ??, attending 10 events in 7 days. Here are my highlights: ? ?? Started the week with my kind of "happy hour,"?a 7am run hosted by Streamline Climate and A Runner's Mind. I demoed first-of-a-kind recyclable sneakers by Asics— ???? for comfort. ?? Got inspired by the potential of AI to positively impact climate solutions in an immersive workshop. In small groups, we brainstormed ways AI will be part of the problem and solution (so much to unpack here). ?? Joined the teams of G2 Venture Partners, Union Labs Ventures & Congruent Ventures on a lovely loop through the headlands. Cycling truly is the golf of the West Coast. ? In an intimate & artsy Cole Valley home, I watched a panel called "What makes good climate storytelling?" and got insight into the minds of 4 talented women focused on telling climate stories, including esteemed author, Rebecca Solnit ??. This was my favorite event. ?? I grew my understanding of the breadth of financing options available to climatetech companies at a TRIPLE panel event hosted by Banyan Infrastructure & Streamline. We heard from folks in equipment financing (Camber Road), venture debt (Mercury) & government grants (Streamline Climate). Elemental Excelerator also shared how they design programs to help their cohorts bridge the gap between venture & project financing. ? Lastly, I learned about divesting your 401k from fossil fuels in a talk by Alex Wright-Gladstein. There was a ton of useful info, but the bottom line is that fossil fuels (the "energy sector") have underperformed the rest of the S&P 500 over the past 10 years by >3%. You can invest fossil fuel free through Sphere. This is only the 2nd SF Climate Week and it will only grow in size, caliber & prestige. I'm eager to organize something next year— please reach out if you're interested in collaborating on a creative event concept, or have thoughts on what was missing from SFCW. ??
