  • ? Featured Artist: Elania Nanopoulos ? As part of Eros of Kosmos at Supermarket Art Fair, Elania Nanopoulos explores the tension between past and present, weaving history, memory, and perception into her artistic practice. ?? ELANIA NANOPOULOS SFAI Alumni BFA 1979 San Francisco, CA, US https://lnkd.in/eqm88FpN Growing up in Greece, Nanopoulos developed an innate awareness of time’s continuity—how the world she observes today has been seen and experienced by countless others before her and will be again in the future. This non-linear perception transforms the anecdotal into the allegorical. Her work conveys this state of perception: a profound physical and empathetic connection to the world, in tension with a historical and contemporary reckoning of destruction and renewal. Through layered narratives, she challenges how we engage with the past while confronting the forces shaping our present. ?? • Hope Dies Last Join us this Saturday for an Artist Talk with SFAI alumni Robin L. Bernstein! Artist's Talk: Saturday, March 22nd starting at 4 pm! Free and open to the public! Exhibition: On view through April 19th! Location: See @transmissiongallery for details Transmission Gallery is pleased to present Hope Dies Last, a solo exhibition of sumptuous fiber-based works by Robin L. Bernstein addressing complex and challenging subjects. In the immediate encounter, the work is beautiful with dynamic cut shapes and enticing color inviting the viewer in. At first, they appear to be painted, one can see the swirling line work. Stepping up closer, the elaborate threaded detail becomes evident. Hundreds and hundreds of pieces of thread and string have been pressed into wax creating a mesmerizing and tactile effect. This visual feast reverberates with our senses, reflecting the intimacy of the endeavor. The richness of color evokes a sense of warmth and vitality, contrasting with the heavy themes the works address for indeed there is a message imbedded in each piece, a troubling truth we might rather not know too deeply, but now it is at hand. @robinlbernstein #SFAI #SFArtistsalumni #ArtTalk #fiberart #politicalart #soloexhibition #robinbernsteinart #transmissiongallery

  • #DiegoTuesday? ?? PROFOUND? ?? Artists: Jun Mo Chung & Lori Hanson? ?? Year: 1987? ?? A gallery exhibit featuring surreal, narrative-driven oil paintings in vibrant colors.? ?? Studio #117 was a hub of creativity from 1984-1988, where artists camped out before each semester to claim their space. This exhibit emerged from the shared influence of two painters working side by side—Jun Mo Chung’s bold, commercial-infused surrealism and Lori Hanson’s intimate, dreamlike Rorschach-inspired compositions. ?? Memories: “Freddie Gleason performed as the MUD MAN—covered head to toe in ceramic slip, with charcoal-masked eyes and a crown of weeds. The reception lasted until 3 AM, featuring a lavish spread of cheeses, breads, duck, and plenty of wine. Even painter Sam Francis stopped by!” ?? Diego Rivera Gallery Poster Show? We’re thrilled to present the Diego Rivera Gallery Poster Show, an online exhibition celebrating the gallery’s history through its vibrant posters and flyers! Curated by SF Artists Alumni in collaboration with the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive, this collection showcases the creativity and legacy of those who exhibited in this iconic space. ?? Follow along as we unveil these posters every Tuesday! #DiegoRiveraGallery #SFAI #SFArtistsAlumni #PosterShow #ArtExhibition #ArtHistory #ArtLegacy

?? Featured Artist: Liz Miller Kovacs ??? ? Through her work in Eros of Kosmos at Supermarket Art Fair, Liz Miller Kovacs examines the intersection of mythology, industry, and environmental permanence in the global landscape.? ? ?? LIZ MILLER KOVACS? SFAI Alumni MFA 2000? Berlin, Germany? www.miller-kovacs.art? ? Svalbard Siren was photographed on location at Longyearbyen Harbour on the island of Svalbard, in the shadow of an abandoned coal loading crane. In the Arctic, where no waste facilities exist for large equipment, this industrial relic looms over the docks like a monument to the island’s mining history. Due to the extreme climate, it will remain intact for centuries, standing as a ghost of the past while the coal industry moves forward with modernized infrastructure. The siren, a mythological figure associated with shipwrecks and treacherous waters, resonates with this site, merging history, industry, and the fragile balance of nature.? ? ?? • Join us tomorrow for a special walk-through of UNRULY: North Bay Artists from the San Francisco Art Institute! ???? ?? Date: Tomorrow, March 8 ? Time: 2 PM ?? Location: Museum of Sonoma County Inspired by the 2022 closure of the San Francisco Art Institute, UNRULY honors the legacy of the school that for 152 years was a safe and creative space for avant-garde ideas and boundary-pushing artistry. This exhibition features a selection of local SFAI alumni and former faculty who continue to embody the spirit of critical thinking, experimentation, and artistic defiance that the institution famously fostered. Curator Jude Mooney will lead the walk-through, joined by select artists from the show, to explore the diverse mediums, materials, and messages on display. While this exhibition feels like a “motley crew” of artists, the common thread is a shared passion for exploration and pushing boundaries. Don’t miss this chance to engage with the art, the artists, and the incredible SFAI legacy. ????
