INFRASTRUCTURE SINKHOLES: Evacuating homes in Japan What can urban cities learn from sinkholes? The sinkhole opened at a road intersection in near Tokyo. and it's believed to be caused by a sewer rupture. INFRASTRUCTURE FAILURE Sinkholes are increasingly common in Japanese cities, as many have ageing sewage pipeline infrastructure. The sinkhole initially measured 10m wide and 5m deep, but it has since quadrupled in size after it merged with another sinkhole nearby. Officials say that it could take two or three years to repair the sewer rupture. MY INFRASTRUCTURE STORY I have been involved with infrastructure maintenance and product sales. Given my career in the environmental industry with infrastructure maintenance, I've taken an interest in infrastructure sinkholes because most are caused by water leaks, stormwater or sewage drainage failures. I was shocked to discover the lack of sinkhole data, reporting, and the infrastructure failures, given the increase in sinkholes globally and the human or property risks. WARNING OF THE HEALTH RISKS: Spreading Sewage on Farmland. Will America wake up to the health consequences? Farmland contamination of soil and groundwater has become a contentious environmental issue in both red and blue states. POISONING OF SOIL & WATER The EPA designated two kinds of PFAS as hazardous substances under the Superfund law, and it mandated that water utilities reduce levels in drinking water to near zero and said there is no safe level of exposure to PFAS. Today, the EPA continues to promote sewage sludge as fertilizer and doesn’t require testing for PFAS, despite the fact that whistleblowers, academics, state officials and the agency’s internal studies over the years have also raised contamination concerns. PFAS, an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, has been detected in sewage sludge, on land treated with sludge fertilizer across the country, and in milk and crops produced on contaminated soil. LAND DISPOSAL Only one state, Maine, has started to systematically test its farms for PFAS. Maine has also banned the use of sludge on its fields. COOLING Water is required for HVAC mechanical systems in buildings.
