  • The much-awaited return of Font Hot Takes is here! ?? Hear from Eve on her latest rendition of the font battles! "The year was 2010, and after 50 years of Bauhaus-y typographic goodness, IKEA made the switch from its Futura-inspired IKEA Sans typeface to Verdana, which at the time was one of the most widely used fonts on the web (but rarely used in print). According to IKEA the main reason for the switch was because it wanted a typeface that could be used in many different languages and on the Web. While today we take the wide range of web typography for granted, in 2010 web fonts were mostly limited to Microsoft's "Core fonts for the Web": Arial, Comic Sans MS, Courier New, Georgia, Impact, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, and Verdana. Now, I don't hate Verdana per se, but it was designed to look good on a computer screen, not in print. It worked well in many languages and was unambiguous even at small point sizes. And while that's fine for body copy or product descriptions, at large sizes Verdana is just plain awkward. This is particularly apparent in its numerals – an important consideration when selecting a typeface for a catalog or in-store product signage where the price is often the most prominent content. The numerals of Futura (and IKEA Sans) are geometric and elegant, with just a hint of quirkiness, whereas the details and letter spacing of Verdana's numerals – carefully crafted for small size, on-screen legibility – become ungainly at large sizes. The story doesn't end there: in 2019, after nearly a decade of using Verdana across its visual identity, IKEA changed its brand typeface again, this time to Noto IKEA, based on the collaborative type family from Monotype and Google. While that's a win for global accessibility since Noto encompasses every written language in the world, I still miss the Futura days." #BattleOfTheFonts #FontHotTakes #Fonts #Typography
