"In a good faith discussion, both parties agree to an honest, respectful dialogue." Learning how to recognize, and respond to, bad faith arguments is a critical skill that takes practice. And yes, it is challenging work that requires us to step back, prepare, and behave logically -- and in the best interest of shared outcomes. If you want to learn more and aren't sure where to start, this article provides a quick overview. Links to more in-depth articles are in the comments below. ?? Refreshing our awareness of good vs bad faith arguments is especially important when tensions and stakes are high. "We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails." - Dolly Parton Such a helpful reminder that course correction isn't inherently a bad thing! Adjusting your plan based on reality is part of doing business. NOT course correcting in the face of new data? Now THAT's a problem! You can embrace the reality of course correction by illuminating problems sooner. Ideas to try with your team include ??: ? Create a team status huddle to anticipate and resolve capacity constraints or unplanned barriers. ? Take your top five most common barriers and create a standard response process. ? Conduct a monthly review meeting where projects are reviewed and discussed with the team for collaborative problem-solving. ? Host a quarterly cross-functional reflection process to create a shared understanding of wins, challenges, and help needed. How do you and your team support each other in rapid course correction? Let's talk about it in the comments. ?? ?? #problemsolving #continuousimprovement #leadershipcoaching

Do you ever struggle to set clear direction? You are not alone! It was autumn and [Senior Leader] was overwhelmed. ?? New, inexperienced leadership team. ?? Significant capacity challenges and operational gaps. ?? Goals and prioritized initiatives were due in two months. They reached out to me after sharing their challenges with a colleague who recommended my approach. ?? We engaged their entire org chart (leaders through front-line) in a process to reflect on their strengths and challenges. *?? We brought the leadership team together in person to draft goals and the priority work necessary to achieve them, based on current realities and the feedback from their teams. ?? We created a simple toolkit for leaders to engage their teams in finalizing their plans. *?? We created routines for the leaders to consistently align their efforts, report progress, and learn from each other. Senior Leader's goals were completed on time, with input from everyone on their team. ? Work was prioritized based on what was needed to relieve capacity constraints and support operational excellence. ?? All because they recognized they had a problem and sought guidance. ? Leaders - you don’t need to have all the answers! Setting clear direction is often overwhelming, especially when the work environment is chaotic. A coach can help! DM anytime to "think out loud" about your situation and helpful next steps. #goalsetting #settingdirection #leadershipdevelopment

Tiny n-size but these poll results got me thinking. I was reminded of being a senior leader in healthcare during "peak COVID" and how much confusion, swirl, and stress there was around EVERYTHING during those long months. It was a time when I was always waiting on key information and consistently unsure how to craft the right message because the facts were ever-evolving, and emotions were running high. It was scary and painful and frustrating for a ton of reasons. And as a leader, it made setting direction feel impossible. Most days all I could do was listen, comfort, and ask questions. Every so often I would summarize and share with my teams what I knew to be true, while specifically acknowledging all the things I did not know and was still trying to find out. If I couldn't set direction, at least I could try to contain and make visible all of our worries. Things aren't necessarily any easier these days... ?? How do you lead when key information is not forthcoming? ?? What do you communicate when you don't know what to say?
