???Boone County is home to an incredible variety of outdoor attractions, natural beauty, and recreational opportunities. That was the key message of the recent Coffee + Connection, State of Our Rec Forum, where participants gathered to discuss the benefits of being in Boone County and ways to strengthen connections between local attractions, businesses, and visitors. ?? The discussion highlighted several advantages of Boone County, including its scenic river valley, diverse attractions, and unique location—offering the charm of rural life while being conveniently close to larger metropolitan areas. Participants also emphasized the community’s strong sense of engagement, with residents eager to volunteer and actively support the county’s parks, campgrounds, and outdoor attractions. One of the main topics of conversation was the importance of creating stronger links between attractions, local restaurants, and businesses to provide visitors with a well-rounded experience. By showcasing all that Boone County has to offer, both to tourists and locals, the goal is to encourage more people to explore their own backyard and appreciate the recreational gems in their community. Notably, many of the county’s attractions attract visitors from across the country. Businesses like Seven Oaks, Rail Explorers, and the Boone County Arboretum have even been working together by sharing seasonal employees, allowing staff to stay in the area year-round while supporting multiple outdoor destinations. Forum participants included Joel Bryan of Seven Oaks Recreation, Inc., Alex Kretzinger from YMCA of the USA DSM Y- Camp, Chelsie Wilson of Boone County Conservation, Andy Bartlett with Ledges State Park, Nathan Osmundson, City of Boone Recreation Director, Matt Halsrud with Central Iowa Impact, and Mark Schneider from the Iowa Arboretum & Gardens. Their insights reinforced the uniqueness of Boone County’s recreational opportunities, from parks and trails to adventure tourism and conservation efforts. As the forum concluded, attendees reflected on how fortunate the community is to have such rich natural resources and attractions. The discussion underscored the importance of working together to highlight Boone County’s offerings and ensure that both residents and visitors can fully experience everything the area has to offer. Training never ends for our awesome Ski Patrol Staff. Sunday morning the entire volunteer patrol started arriving at Seven Oaks at 6:45am for their winter chair evacuation drill. Train hard and aways be ready.
