Throughout #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we have highlighted several projects that celebrate tribal sovereignty and the identities of our Indigenous clients. Some projects, such as the Oyate Health Center in Rapid City, SD, serve people from several Tribal communities and bring together a mix of identity and culture. Because of the shared history on this land, it was important to our team to reflect all ties to this site when we began working on mitigation activities at the Oyate Health Center in 2019.? The Rapid City Mitigation Activities project was part of the Indian Health Service’s (IHS) obligations to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. From architectural documentation to oral histories, our work on these activities shaped the way we understand this site. It is an emotionally charged place, with many community members having familial ties to the Rapid City Indian School, the Sioux Sanatorium or Sioux San Hospital, and now the Oyate Health Center. The original Sioux San building was demolished last year, raising concerns from the community about losing such a historic building and landmark. To help mitigate concerns and reconnect people to the site, our team is working with IHS to facilitate engagement workshops and capture the community’s vision for a Sioux San(atorium) Memorial. While the former hospital’s site stands empty today, it is our hope that the feedback we gain from these workshops can help shape what the site becomes next. Bodwé team members are in Sells, AZ this week for the groundbreaking ceremony on the Santa Rosa Ranch School, a new 48,000-square-foot facility that will provide a safe and healthy learning environment to 125 Native American students from the Tohono O'odham Nation and generations of students who will come after them. We are proud to be a part of this project and look forward to seeing construction progress in the coming months. Rhonda Weber, 7GAE Quality Assurance Manager, will be on-site 24/7 to ensure that the new school is built with quality materials and meets the federal requirements of the BIA and BIE. Last week’s 2024 Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) Conference was a truly special event. Having attended, exhibited and presented at the conference, the Bodwé Group is grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many professionals and subject-matter experts with a passion for supporting Tribal communities and to experience several cultural performances, including a Call of the Conch and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Bird Singers. We also enjoyed hearing from the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) Culture Department and learning about their Food Sovereignty journey and their work to establish NHBP’s presence in the Battle Creek Historical Museum through art and food. J. Scott Winchester, Alexander Hokkanen, and Tawa Ducheneaux gave a great presentation on the mitigation activities at the Oyate Health Center site, and Isabel Cournoyer enjoyed meeting conference attendees in the exhibitor hall and sharing more about our work preserving history and promoting cultural sustainability within Indigenous communities. This week marks an important milestone for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Tohono O'odham Nation as they celebrate the start of construction on the new Santa Rosa Ranch School.
