The U.S. Council on Environmental Quality, at the command of Donald Trump, is removing all of the regulations implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) (https://lnkd.in/g2xmrK76). All federal agencies will be self-regulating with respect to NEPA if this action is completed. Also, Executive Order 14154 restricts the content of assessments. The public comment period is in effect and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry has prepared comments which are being shared prior to submission. Correcting misinformation?is often a waste of time ?? Research has shown?using the ‘bypassing technique’ instead is more likely to change attitudes than factual information. From ‘the climate's always been changing’ to ‘plastic won’t hurt a shark’, we are bombarded with factually incorrect information with clear counter-evidence. As professionals in this space, our first reaction?is often to correct these errors by communicating facts, logic and scientific research. But a recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found the correction method isn’t all that effective in changing someone’s attitude. Granados Samayoa & Albarracín (2024) suggest using the ‘bypassing’ technique instead. This is done by counteracting the false claim with positive counterclaims about the topic, often in a more general sense. This looks like: Fake claim: “We don’t need renewable energy because the climate has always been changing.” To try to change their attitude, you could reply in two ways: 1?? Correction method: “Scientific consensus from decades of rigorous research shows the climate is warming unnaturally quickly due to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.” ?? Research suggests you’re unlikely to change many minds with this approach (even with evidence, science and facts on your side). 2?? Bypass technique: “Renewables are now the?cheapest form of energy and aren’t as polluting as coal and oil. I’m excited to have lower power bills and cleaner air.” ?? The study found this is a better use of your energy and is more likely to change attitudes! Have you tried the bypass technique?
