A common question in the NY Smith household over the last 25 years has been "Remind me what you do each day? Something with the Internet, right!?!" My answer has basically boiled down to: "I help turn computers on and off." I say that sentence with an immense amount pride. I have countless memories from the invisible-to-most world of #internet #infrastructure that have shaped my view of the world, introduced me to incredible humans, and taught me so much about how connecting people, applications and ideas can be such a force for good. Those memories started out learning with Raj, Matt and Adam that we couldn't use 2 x 20A circuit's worth of power at #Telehouse because there wasn't enough #HVAC for our racks of web-scale gear (original Opteron's were the 2004 version of H100's!), to moving thousands of servers in the back of a small fleet of U-Haul's, to touring #cooling towers at Digital Realty with Raul in #Singapore (it was hot up there!), to figuring out how to service #edge servers with Scott and the SBA Communications team in a Boston parking lot datacenter, to rolling out 40+ global locations of network, #interconnection and server capacity during the #pandemic at light speed with Equinix with George, Jonathan and Sara ... I guess you could say, I've seen a bit of the whole "getting computers into the right places" kinda thing. So it's with that context that I share how I excited I am to be joining the board of CloudOne Digital, along with its operating businesses Servers.com and Liquid Web. There is so much to do to make deploying and managing "servers" and the hosted solutions the world depends on, more affordable, sustainable, easier to use and higher performing for today's businesses where access to digital capabilities is a hard requirement. CloudOne has a vision, platform and culture that represents the best of #hosting. They are hyper-focused on servicing their customers and I'm excited to help support them as they bring global scale and reach to SMB's and web-scale companies alike. “In a previous life, I was a game developer, and my number one fear when launching a game would be ‘do I really need that much server capacity?’” Rob Schoeppe, CCO of AccelByte, gives some valuable advice for how game studios can provision servers during a time when rightsizing can feel like a shot in the dark “Forecast your concurrent users and then secure bare metal capacity to meet at least 30% to 50% of that demand.
