Greetings LinkedIn Family, For the past five months, I have had the privilege of serving as a site coordinator for Howard University’s Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) program in Memphis, Tennessee. This experience has been a transformative journey of strategic planning, community engagement, and leadership, working alongside dedicated students, alumni, and local organizations to create a meaningful and sustainable impact. Our initiative focused on youth empowerment and community development, partnering with local churches, schools, and organizations to address key needs. A central part of our efforts was creating a mural for children. Additionally, we worked with food banks and afterschool programs, supporting families and youth in need through hands-on service and mentorship. As a site coordinator, I managed the logistics, volunteer coordination, and partnerships that made this initiative possible. One of the most rewarding aspects was collaborating with the Howard University Alumni Club in Memphis, whose mentorship and support played a vital role in strengthening our impact. Their commitment to service reinforced the importance of bridging the gap between students and alumni to create lasting change. A major highlight of this experience was the incredible opportunity to meet the Mayor of Memphis, where we discussed the importance of community-driven initiatives and the role of young leaders in shaping the future. It was inspiring to see how local leadership supports efforts and to share our mission with city officials who are dedicated to uplifting their communities. The process was not without challenges there were long nights, early mornings, and moments of uncertainty but every effort was worth it. Witnessing the joy on the children’s faces, the engagement of community members, and the bonds formed among volunteers reaffirmed my belief that service extends far beyond a single trip. It is about building sustainable relationships and planting seeds for long-term growth. I am deeply grateful for this experience and excited to continue this journey of service.

Meet Zayda Strother from Taylor University, a recent Serve901 tripgoer who had the powerful experience of visiting the National Civil Rights Museum on MLK Jr.’s actual birthday. Standing where history was made, she and her crew reflected on the legacy of Dr. King and the ongoing work for justice and equity. Their journey in Memphis didn’t stop there! They also had the opportunity to learn about the Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR), an organization committed to training and equipping excellent public school teachers to ensure all K-12 students in Memphis receive a great education. ???? From honoring civil rights leaders to seeing education as a vehicle for change, this trip was a reminder that service, learning, and impact go hand in hand. ?? It was great to discuss the work of Harvard Law School's Education Law Strategic Litigation Clinic, where we are representing the Kentucky Student Voice Team and 13 remarkable student plaintiffs. In 1989, the Kentucky Supreme Court declared that all students in the state have a right to a quality public education. Unfortunately, the legislature is failing to meet its constitutional duty to provide Kentucky students with an adequate and equitable education. This case could have sweeping consequences in Kentucky and across the nation. The fight for access to high-quality public education is why I came to law school.
