Two years ago today, AmeriCorps joined the U.S. Department of Education and Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University at The White House to launch the National Partnership for Student Success, answering President Biden's call for 250,000 more tutors and mentors to accelerate student recovery and success in our schools. Each year, more than 51,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve in nearly 10,000 P—12 schools, and thousands more provide support to early learning and out-of-school time programs.?They help students develop critical reading and math skills, create warm and welcoming environments, guide students through the college and financial aid application process, and much more to make a difference, like our older adult AmeriCorps members serving in AARP Foundation Experience Corps' Literations. To these members, tutoring students isn't just about helping them learn to read but creating connections to provide trusted support and build confidence in students. These members dedicate their time after retirement to rally behind our students and ensure they are set up to thrive. During?NPSS' second anniversary and AmeriCorps' 30th anniversary, we thank the hundreds of thousands of Americans who choose to serve and transform the lives of our students and families every day.?Read more: Bit.ly/4cLLdBS #Education #NationalService #Volunteerism

Serve Indiana Ambassador Joey Byers used this quote as his "morning motivation or afternoon affirmation a lot during his service year when he went into the prisons during his year, and they always had great discussions around this quote. After his term of service, Serve Indiana Ambassador Joey Byers began a career as a Hepatitis C Care Coordinator. This role resonated with him because it is closely related to the service he was able to do during his AmeriCorps year. The majority of people living with Hepatitis C typically have or had a substance use disorder, which is something that has affected Joey in more than one way in his life. #ServeINAmbassador #AmeriStory #AmeriCorpsWorks?

Are you joining in the fun with the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration? This week one of our very own was highlighted as festivities began. DWD Chief Unemployment Insurance Officer Noah Shelton was recently honored as the Indiana Civil Rights Commission’s (ICRC) 2024 Next Level Leadership Award recipient. Presented at the Governor’s Reception during Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration June 25, 2024, the award was presented to Shelton in recognition of his impact, initiative and community service as a publicly recognized up-and-coming leader. In all, Shelton, who didn’t even know he had been nominated, was one of five African American Hoosiers, along with an ICRC employee, to be honored during the ceremony for exceptional efforts across diverse fields that include education, entrepreneurship, and community leadership. “I had no clue (about the nomination),” he said. “I was traveling and received a phone call. It was such a humbling moment.” Read: https://lnkd.in/g3CXRsFX

Amazing Work, Megna Chari and team! Please know that Serve Indiana appreciates your exemplary work and have big plans to celebrate you soon! This was a wonderful event that truly served a community need in an extraordinary way!
I feel so privileged to have been able to lead my AmeriCorps team this year on our long term project. Our team hosted a community resource fair for our unhoused neighbors in Indianapolis, IN at the Garfield Park Arts Center. Through our research with the yearly Point in Time Count that counts the number of sheltered and unsheltered people who are experiencing homelessness on a single night in a community, we were able to see that African American males over the age of 35 are the highest number of people experiencing homelessness. We worked diligently to partner with 25+ local organizations such as Horizon House, Eskenazi Health, BellFlower Clinic, BU Wellness Network, Damien Center, Empire Beauty School, Gennesaret Free Clinics, CHANGING FOOTPRINTS . ORG, Indiana Immunization Coalition, and Marion County Public Health Department to provide essential services to this population. Through fundraising efforts we were able to raise a little under $15,000 to support this population. This money was used directly to provide food, clothing, warm weather kits, hygiene kits, and sleeping gear such as blankets, tarps and sleeping bags. We were also able to provide a variety of free services such as haircuts, STI testing, vaccinations, medical check ups, dental services, shoes and fresh produce through the partnerships we made with agencies in the community. Our resource fair was able to provide services and resources to 240 unhoused neighbors. I will forever be changed by the interactions I had with these individuals. Hearing their stories first hand, gave me a deeper understanding into the experience of unhoused individuals in our community. Our event was able to provide a safe space for a large amount of people who are often overlooked. I am humbled and grateful for this opportunity and hope to continue to help this population throughout my career. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors- Cummins Inc. Serve Indiana, The Health Foundation Of Greater Indianapolis Inc, Gilead Sciences, BU Wellness Network, Indy Hygiene Hub, Deborah’s Place, I Support The Girls, and Indy Parks and Recreation for their generosity towards our efforts.

Serve Indiana Ambassador Joey Byers chose this Brene Brown quote as his favorite. He had this to say about it, “My AmeriCorps Program Manager gave this quote to me, essentially on the first day of our service year and it has stuck with me ever since. I no longer am silent about hard things in life, and I appreciate this quote every day!” #ServeINAmbassador #AmeriStory #AmeriCorpsWorks?

Serve Indiana Ambassador Joey Byers has been an exemplary alum for years now. He was recognized as a 2023 Serve Indiana Outstanding Alum nominee for his commitment even after his term of service. His nominator and esteemed Serve Indiana Ambassador in her own right, Rachel Biddle had this to say about Joey; “He served as my mentor during my AmeriCorps year of service. Without him, the year would have been much more challenging. Joey helped me stay focused and encouraged me to take advantage of all the opportunities that were available. He always offered me wonderful advice and pushed me to do things that I would not have typically done. He is very creative and not only helped his team but helped his service site implement new ideas and design new program methods.” #ServeINAmbassador #AmeriStory #AmeriCorpsWorks?

Serve Indiana Ambassador Joey Byers' AmeriStory: “I chose to serve for AmeriCorps because I was ready to help underserved communities. The personal impact serving during my year helped me look at life differently and helped me mature so much. I learned that it's okay to speak up at times when it's hard to. I learned how to voice my opinions in a respectful and professional way. I didn't have too many challenges, but I was surrounded by my team who I did see face challenges and I knew I could be there emotionally and physically for them; we were like a small family!” #ServeINAmbassador #AmeriStory #AmeriCorpsWorks?
