The Serve Illinois Commission is a 40 member (25 voting and 15 non-voting), bi-partisan board appointed by the Governor. Its mission is to improve Illinois communities by enhancing volunteerism and instilling an ethic of service throughout the State. The Commission is accomplishing this mission through the support of local community-based efforts to enhance volunteer opportunities and the administration of Illinois' AmeriCorps program. The Commission's vision is an Illinois where all citizens recognize their ability and responsibility to help strengthen their communities through voluntary service. It works to expand volunteerism throughout rural, suburban, and urban Illinois, involving people of all backgrounds, cultures, ages, and abilities. The enabling legislation of the Serve Illinois Commission (PA98-0692, 20 ILCS 2330) charges the Commission to promote and support community service in public and private programs to meet the needs of Illinois citizens, to stimulate new volunteerism and community service initiatives and partnerships, and to serve as a resource and advocate within the Department of Human Services for community service agencies, volunteers, and programs which utilize State and private volunteers.

On Friday, March 7, 2025, IDHS-Serve Illinois Upstate Volunteer Programs Coordinator, Cecilia Maciel Martinez, attended the 3rd Annual Latina Heritage Day Brunch hosted by the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation at the University Club of Chicago. The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation (ILLCF) in partnership with various associations has hosted its annual Latina Heritage Day brunch in honor of March 15th Latina Heritage Day in Illinois since 2023. The event included networking, an influencer panel, and special remarks from Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. Marta Cerda was recognized with the Office of the Governor Illinois Commission Volunteerism and Community Service Certificate of Appreciation for her eight years of board service and unwavering dedication to advancing the Latino community on a national, state, and city level. ? AMERICORPS WEEK MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ? Daighla Williams has been a dedicated member of PeoriaCorps since October 21, 2024. A hardworking and motivated individual, she enjoys learning about the environment and actively engages in hands-on experiences that expand her knowledge. Originally from Idaho, she relocated to Peoria with a strong interest in pursuing a career in environmental science. Daighla is on track to complete her 900 service hours, demonstrating her commitment, perseverance, and strong work ethic. She takes pride in her work and is always willing to go the extra mile, whether planting trees/plants, maintaining green spaces, or participating in community clean-up efforts. Her enthusiasm for sustainability and conservation is evident in her dedication to learning new skills, from urban forestry techniques to stormwater management practices. In addition to her environmental interests, Daighla enjoys working as part of a team and brings a positive attitude to every project. She values the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the community and is eager to continue building her expertise in the environmental field.
