Great endorsement from Arif Kamal and the American Cancer Society!
Palliative care is misunderstood. Being the first palliative care fellow trained at Mayo Clinic Rochester, I spent much of that time teaching my well-meaning clinical colleagues about the difference between hospice and palliative care, balancing quality and quantity of life, and realizing when there's a false choice between the two. And that journey has continued for the fifteen years since as a palliative care physician and advocate. Public perception polls continue to show that the majority of Americans do not know what palliative care is, how it can be helpful, and how it can complement the care of other clinicians. There remain significant public misperceptions, to the tune of 90% or more of Americans not knowing what palliative care is. So as American Cancer Society is a proud member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Math (NASEM), we're excited to share the upcoming three-part webinar series on "Changing Public Perceptions to Build Awareness, Knowledge, and Uptake of Palliative Care: An Evidence-based Approach." So excited to see the results of the work my friends Anthony Back, Marian Grant, DNP, ACNP-BC, ACHPN, FPCN, FAAN, and Diane E. Meier, MD, FACP, FAAHPM and hear more about their online toolkit to increase familiarity and appreciation of such an important philosophy of care. Please register for the free webinars here:
