CRASH COURSE CUISINE WITH HUDSON YANG here in the US—premieres THIS SUNDAY 3/9 on NatGeo at 10PM! You may remember Hudson from his time as the irrepressible Eddie Huang in the ABC show FRESH OFF THE BOAT, which ran 6 seasons and helped transform Hollywood. Read more below from his proud father, writer Jeff Yang, about the inspiration for the show: "Fresh off the Boat" ended right as Hudson was going into his HS senior year. He was excited about going back to “regular schoolâ€â€”except you know, Covid. He spent the year like most kids: Locked down at home, facing a computer screen. The one thing he loved doing while in quar? Cooking. He’d started cooking lessons and invested in a craft Vietnamese restaurant in the Covid runup. And of course, he was applying to college. For his personal essay he wrote about his grandma on his Mom’s side—who helped raise him. She spoke no English and he spoke little Chinese; the language they shared was food. But she was the only adult to let him cook with her, unafraid if he got little burns or cuts. She let him make mistakes. And as quar ended, when Singaporean production company Beach House Pictures (a division of Fremantle Media) reached out about developing an unscripted food show, we pitched one based on his essay. Most cooking shows hide mistakes—or mock them. He wanted a show about mistakes as part of LEARNING. The show turned out to be ORDER UP (or in the US, CRASH COURSE CUISINE): A food journey show where Hudson goes into the kitchens of masters to work for them, then is taught their singular dish or technique—and is tasked with replicating it by himself, with his own spin. First across the US, and then across the many varied cuisines of Singapore. He failed a lot (hilariously). And succeeded a lot too. You might recognize some of the folks he spent time with (and cooked for) along the way! We’re getting ready to shoot Season 2 now, this summer…in Canada and Taiwan. Hope they’re ready for Hudson! This season will include indigenous cuisines, farm-to-table ingredients, and cross-cultural fusion cuisine. Please spread the word!
