With thrombophilia, you’re at high risk of blood clots. This can create blockages in your arteries or veins, which can damage organs, and cause a stroke or heart attack. If blood clots are common in your family or you had a blood clot before 40, a genetic condition may be the cause. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. In PH, the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, blocked or damaged. This change makes it harder for blood to flow through the lungs. Pressure increases in the pulmonary arteries and forces the heart’s right ventricle to work harder to pump blood through these arteries. Over time, this extra strain can weaken the heart and lead to complications such as right heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension can be caused by genetic conditions as well as other diseases. Symptoms often develop slowly and include shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, and swelling in the legs or abdomen. Hypertriglyceridemia refers to elevated levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood. High levels can raise the risk of heart disease and cause atherosclerosis, particularly when paired with another lipid condition. Genetic factors (such as hypercholesterolemia running in the family), lifestyle choices, obesity, diabetes and certain medications can have an impact on lipid disorders. Diet adjustments, physical activity and medications like statins — to lower cholesterol and cardiovascular risk — are all part of management. Triglycerides and cholesterol are necessary for our bodies, but only in the proper amounts. Too high or too low levels are the first signs of problems. A significant risk factor for heart attacks and strokes is lipid abnormalities. Excess LDL — or “bad” cholesterol — in the blood causes high cholesterol, also known as hypercholesterolemia.
