Notwithstanding a potential funding crisis, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), the City of Philadelphia and other partners are still moving ahead with several projects meant to improve the system and attract more riders, according to Jody Holton, SEPTA's Chief planning and Strategy Officer. Those include streamlining bus routes and having more frequent buses, overhauling route names and signage, and reducing bus lane blockages that slow down daily commutes. For instance, Kelley Yemen, Philadelphia’s Director of Multimodal Planning, said the City has helped improve bus service over the last three years by creating?transit priority lanes?on roads such as Market Street and JFK Boulevard downtown, where the lanes are painted red, and the Boulevard Direct service in Northeast Philly. Car blockages in the downtown lanes have dropped 85% and buses are moving up to 15% faster, she said. (via Billy Penn at WHYY). Center City District hosted a "Mobility Matters" discussion about boosting multimodal travel - transit, walking and cycling, in addition to motor vehicles - as an economic development strategy. Regarding transit, some of the business owners wanted to know how they can help. Jody Holton, SEPTA’s chief planning and strategy officer responded: post on LinkedIn and other social media “that you use the system,” Holton suggested. “I think those things are tremendously powerful....It’s important that we talk about using the system and how SEPTA is a part of the region.” C: City of Philadelphia

This funding ask is critical to the economic vitality and environmental health of the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; hoping to see action from the Pennsylvania State Senate very soon. C: 5th Square, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia
On Tuesday, October 1, #SEPTA General Manager/CEO Leslie S. Richards testified with Katharine Eagan Kelleman of Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Richard Farr of rabbittransit, and Tim Geibel of Crawford Area Transportation Authority at a Senate Transportation Committee hearing asking final legislative approval in October of the Governor's proposal to fund #publictransportation. The panel highlighted the critical role public transportation plays for millions of Pennsylvanians in all 67 counties – connecting employees and customers to businesses, students to school, and seniors to essential services. And that without additional funding, there will be dire consequences for our riders, the communities we serve, and the Commonwealth as a whole. Severe service reductions and major fare increases will trigger a spiral of less service and higher costs. That will critically compromise individual mobility and economic productivity across the state. After the hearing, Leslie joined a broad based group of supporters including TWU 234 and hundreds of stakeholders and legislators at a Rally in Harrisburg to urge action on new transportation funding. The General Assembly is in session again this week and we are continuing our full-court press to secure passage of long-term dedicated funding for transit. We are grateful for public transportation’s many supporters in the legislature and partners and advocates in transportation who are supporting this critical effort on behalf of statewide transit and those who rely on it every day. #ISEPTAPHILLY #waytogo #funding

"Why would we keep destroying our city and our planet when we know how to create better and greener ways for people to get around," asks Inga Saffron. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)'s approach to rebuilding the Philadelphia portions of I-95 solely as a highway project is being called into question amidst the growing climate crisis. Urgency is mounting, demanding a shift in perspective to view I-95 as part of a broader transportation network. It's critical for PennDOT to explore strategies that steer drivers away from I-95 and towards public transit options. Supporting Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the best way to fight congestion, not expanding highways (e.g., "induced demand").
