We’re honored to share a breakthrough in ovarian cancer care for Hampton Roads! When Becky Kirby was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, she became the first patient to receive Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Thanks to this innovative treatment, Becky is now in remission and excited about the future. She donated a bell to her surgeon's office for patients to ring when they complete cancer treatment. HIPEC offers a life-extending option for women battling late-stage ovarian cancer for people in the Hampton Roads community. To tackle the nationwide shortage of respiratory therapists, we've partnered with Tidewater Community College to launch one of the first Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship Programs in the nation. This innovative “earn while you learn” model provides students with paid schooling, full-time employment, and hands-on training at Sentara. Kristian, Kyle, and Odyssey are among the first to benefit from this life-changing opportunity, gaining skills that go far beyond just breathing techniques. Supporting community health and access to preventive care As part of our commitment to improving community wellness, we recently hosted our annual drive-thru flu vaccination clinics at 17 locations across Virginia and northeast North Carolina. more than 2,600 community members received their free flu shot without even leaving their vehicles, helping to protect themselves and others ahead of flu season. Meet Andria, LPN, a member of our new hybrid care team bringing quality health care to students while at school! ?? We launched a new partnership with Hampton City Schools and Harrisonburg City Public Schools to offer school-based telehealth clinics to provide immediate access to healthcare for students and faculty without leaving school. This innovative and creative new program will diagnose and treat minor illnesses and offer comprehensive support when a child is feeling sick. By addressing common barriers to healthcare, such as transportation and access to primary care, we’re improving the health of our communities and students’ academic success and overall well-being. Together, we are committed to fostering a healthier future for all! We're planning to expand this program at additional Virginia Title 1 schools soon.
