After graduating from college, Imani interned with our cultural diversity department at Sentara RMH and helped plan the very camp her brother, Israel, attended. Now, Israel is studying Kinesiology at George Mason University with dreams of becoming a Physical Therapist. “Attending this camp really set up my future and helped me get where I wanted to be. We are proud to partner with Eastern Virginia Medical School to launch the first adult sickle cell treatment program in Hampton Roads! ?? We celebrated the opening of the Sentara-EVMS Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program last week. The program will bring specialists from hospital medicine, general medicine, psychiatry, and pain medicine under one roof. Sickle cell disease is one of the most common genetic disorders in the U.S. It is a lifelong condition that affects the physical, mental, and emotional health of those diagnosed. Sickle cell disease disproportionally impacts historically underserved populations. More than 90% of Americans with the disease are Black, and 3-9% are Hispanic. “Historically, across the nation, there has not been an equitable investment in sickle cell care compared to many other diseases that affect majority populations,” said Michael Hooper, M.D., chief academic officer for Sentara. “We saw that as a discrepancy we wanted to address locally.” We're proud to support advancing sickle cell treatment and research in our communities. Sentara executive director of community engagement and impact, Sherry Norquist, had the honor of speaking at the 2024 Jazz on the Lawn event in Gainesville, Va. —a night filled with incredible food, music, and company. Proceeds from the event support the Virginia Women and Family Support Center, which provides long-term housing for pregnant women and their children while offering resources for education, trauma care, and maternal health to help them achieve long-term independence. We're on a mission to bring life-saving breast cancer screenings to those in need. The Sentara Foundation is raising $1 million to add two more 3D mobile mammography vans to our fleet, expanding access to those who need it. Early detection saves lives, and these vans bring care into the community. Last year, just one of our mammogram vans screened more than 26,000 women and detected 418 abnormal results, which led to 20 confirmed breast cancer cases. Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month! ?? To honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors come from the Caribbean, Spain, Mexico, Central America, and South America, we've hosted special events in our facilities for patients and visitors, and celebrations among our divisions with colleagues. All hospital cafeterias featured a special menu of popular Hispanic meals like Baja fish tacos and Verde chicken tostadas. Patients, visitors, and colleagues also got to sample some sweet treats while walking though the display of flags that represented the rich diversity of Hispanic countries.
