A couple of weeks ago our mighty Sensor Tower engineering team made the trek to Istanbul, Turkey for their 2024 offsite. It was a great week of building, collaboration, co-working, learning, and even a little bit of fun sailing on the Bosphorus River - not that coding and building amazing products isn't fun. So proud of how far we've come as a team and company. Also, the Istanbul cats were very gracious hosts. With the landmark case allowing online sports betting in the US in 2018, the betting landscape continues to evolve as new (cough) "players" enter the market. While FanDuel and DraftKings Inc. are still the dominant presence, newcomer #ESPNBet has been gaining market share as the app set a record for downloads in November, 2023 for one month. But while some states are still holdouts, examples like North Carolina, which legalized online gambling in March, 2024 saw big spikes in downloads after massive social ad spend from DraftKings, a trend that is all but certain to continue as more states legalize. Sensor Tower at the ballot box: 55 days and counting As Vice President Harris and former President Trump take the stage for tonights US Presidential debate, we wanted to see what keywords and phrases have been used most often in their digital advertising in August. Not surprisingly, Pathmatics (By Sensor Tower) advertising insights show the candidates names topped each of their lists, as well as keywords, "Donation" and "Support". But, diving deeper into Trump's ad text, we find multiple variations of his recognizable catch phrase, "Make America Great Again" as well as "Radical Left," "Border," and "Dangerously liberal Kamala." For the Harris campaign, creative keywords referencing policy issues like, "Health Care," "Reproductive freedom, "Homeowners," and "Tax" stand out. However, One noticeable, nearly absent word or phrase in Trump's ads are references to his running mate, JD Vance, while text like, "Tim Walz," "Governor Walz," and "My running mate," show up in Harris' ads in higher volume. One primary reason for this is while Vance was named in mid July, Walz wasn't named until August 9th, making it a priority to get his name into ads and introduce him to the voting pool. But, while ad messaging is a primary way to reach voters, all eyes will be on the candidates tonight. And judging by the aftermath of the last Presidential debate, we'll be awaiting September's round of digital ads and keywords. Sensor Tower's monthly gaming pulse has arrived with trends, top charts, and leading games across countries for August. Fairlight Games' #AFKJourney leads the big movers this month, up two spots to #6, by worldwide revenue growth, driven by a successful launch in Asia on August 8th. While the game initially found traction in western markets following it's March, '24 release, breaking into the top 5 download rankings in the US, France, and Germany, it also topped share of voice (SOV) across Asian markets on YouTube after extensive advertising. But the Summer months turned up the heat with a ten-fold MoM revenue increase, 70% coming from new markets. Sensor Tower at the ballot box: 61 days and counting. With both the Harris and Trump campaigns pouring big money into digital advertising, their ultimate goal, like any advertising, is how many people are looking, and from where? Between July 19th, when President Biden ceded his run to Harris, to August 24th, both campaigns drew the most impressions, by far, from YouTube, with Harris gaining 49% and Trump 59% of their impressions from the channel. With heavy spend in Facebook and Instagram Harris is also seeing higher impression share in both of those channels, while Trump gained 23% of his impressions from Twitter, a channel Harris hasn't invested in as of yet. It's still important to note, as we've pointed out previously, that the Harris campaign has also outspent the Trump campaign in digital advertising, nearly 7:1 in this time frame, with total impressions favoring Harris at over 4.6B to Trump's 703M. But, the data doesn't lie as both campaigns might consider investing even more on YouTube in the coming months.
