SensCy’s mission is to improve the cybersecurity health of small and medium-sized organizations and be the trusted guide for sensible cybersecurity. In today’s digital world, data is a valuable asset and hackers are realizing that SMOs are significantly less protected than large companies with many resources. SensCy ensures that small businesses have the proper education, sound policy, best practices and a clear understanding of their cyberhealth—dramatically reducing the chances of a catastrophic cybersecurity incident and are prepared to respond and recover should an incident occur. SensCy is committed to its clients, offering an affordable, easily understood solution and the personal attention required to create a proactive cybersecurity culture.

There are many great cybersecurity startup founders, but only one is a US Governor. Gov. Rick Snyder, a two-term Governor of Michigan, a VC, and a COO who helped scale a company from $600 million to $6 billion ARR is now a founder of SensCy. Rick shared his wisdom about election security, building companies, and selling to the government on Inside the Network. Here are my top three learnings: 1. People overestimate the importance of investment and underestimate the importance of the first customer Getting funding is important but what’s even more important is getting that first customer. Getting the first customer is hard, and it should be celebrated as much as raising a VC round. Founders must remember that no matter how good they are at fundraising, they need to be good at solving real problems and getting customers to pay for solutions. 2. Traditional planning is dead. Go into the field as fast as possible & learn The times when founders were able to mastermind some amazing solution, build it for two years, and then announce it to the world are gone (if they were ever a good idea anyway). Getting an alpha or a beta version out early and working with design partners from day zero is critical for success. 3. When things get tough, remember the 5-year rule Building a company is hard and it’s expected that founders will get lost in a sea of urgent to-dos and issues that need immediate attention. When this happens, it’s important to take a long-term perspective. Think about your life in five years and ask yourself “How material will this be years from now, not today?”. Almost anything you deal with will look much better from that perspective. Only by putting things into a long-term perspective can founders regain focus on what truly matters.
