Happy Ramadan, everyone! ?? Ramadan is a very spiritual month for Muslims of all ethnicities and cultures, and the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Though it an observance of faith, the month is also anticipated and celebrated by Muslims. Ramadan is a month dedicated to developing mindfulness, self-control and to being generous and charitable. This is why observant Muslims will fast from food and water from sunrise to sunset and engage in more mindful way of living (e.g., being mindful of temper, being considerate of others, etc.). The ability to manage basic needs for short periods of time is meant to produce self-control but also create empathy for those with less privilege. Charity is a big part of the month and is the theme behind the celebration at the end, Eid al-Fitr (meaning both the festival of the breaking of the fast, but also the celebration of obligated charity, or fitra). Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for 3 days and 3 nights, with the main day being the first day of Eid. #CelebrateEverything

We are so excited to be part of the #CelebrateEverything community, which is yet another fantastic and impactful brainchild of our team member, Dr. Rehman Abdulrehman. ?? Through celebration of the holidays and observances we can ensure that citizens from all communities are represented in our culture. #CelebrateEverything provides a list of 10 significant cultural celebrations and observances that we can acknowledge, learn from and….celebrate! These 10 holidays and observances are umbrellas that cover all communities in one way or another to ensure we are including everyone. It is a sure-fire way to support those from marginalized ethno-cultural communities towards greater inclusion and equity, but also gives us the gift of becoming more informed and educated about our neighbours, truly creating community and, changing “them”, into “us”. We love this initiative and are so excited to be part of it! ??

When in the business of helping leaders lead best, practicing what you preach is a necessary requirement. And so it was no surprise to me that Senscia Leadership and it's founder Morgan Hembree, PsyD, MBA expressed a strong interest and has now joined our community of organizations promoting #inclusion through #CelebrateEverything. Though the initiative has significant pay off for a small investment of engagement, it still takes courage to do the right thing, like Senscia Leadership did. Please join me in welcoming Senscia Leadership to the #CelebrateEverything community. The #FunFactFriday series is still going strong over on Morgan's LinkedIn! Explore interesting insights from psychology, paired with practical tips to enhance your leadership skills and elevate your everyday life. ??
Happy Friday, LinkedIn! After a week off, we’re back with another #FunFactFriday post. This week, I’ve been reflecting on how often the emotional experience of a single leader is felt and expressed by others on their team—and even across the organization. While this can be uplifting when emotions like passion and optimism are in play, it often becomes a challenge when the emotions are less comfortable, such as frustration, worry, or disappointment. This phenomenon is called?emotional contagion, the process by which emotions spread from one person to another. While it’s likely easy for all of us to relate to this idea through personal experiences, the science behind it is fascinating! ?? Our brains are equipped with?mirror neurons, which are a type of neuron that fires not only when we perform an action but also when we observe someone else doing it. These neurons allow us to "mirror" the emotional states of those around us, creating a shared emotional experience. When a leader projects calm and optimism, their team subconsciously picks up on these cues through tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions. These signals activate the?reward systems?in the brain, boosting dopamine and promoting feelings of safety and engagement. Conversely, when a leader exhibits frustration or worry, these cues can activate the?amygdala—the brain’s threat detector—triggering a stress response in others. Some might read this and think,?“Okay, cool. I’ll just pretend to be calm.”?But here’s the catch: humans are notoriously bad at hiding their true emotions, especially when they leak through subtle cues we can’t consciously control. Want a better approach???? ?? Acknowledge uncomfortable emotions openly and provide context.?This allows team members to use other parts of their brain to process the situation, rather than simply reacting to unspoken cues. For example, try saying something like this: "Team, if I seem off today, it’s because we’re preparing for a tough discussion with the Board next week. I’m not sure how it will pan out, but I’m confident we’ll find a path forward together. Let’s discuss this further today and make a plan.” This approach is honest, vulnerable, and minimizes emotional contagion from clouding the team’s judgment. Plus, it demonstrates a realistic hope and optimism about what the team can do. Give it a try, and let me know how it works for you! ??

The #FunFactFriday feature this week is on how much mindset matters when leading people. Check it out! ??
Happy #FunFactFriday, everyone! Last week I did not get a FFF post out, unfortunately. I know that was very upsetting for you all. Hopefully this week's post is SUPER helpful to make up for it. ?? It is always an honor to get to witness a leader's true, unfiltered thoughts and feelings. Often, I observe frustration or disappointment about a direct report's behavior, especially when expectations aren’t being met. When we dig deeper into the root cause of the frustration, it’s common to hear it framed as a sign of incompetence or lack of commitment. After years of studying human behavior, I can confidently say: "Nah, dude." ?? Yes, some people may not be a great fit or struggle to perform at their best, but there are?many?other reasons someone might be having a hard time. Check out the graphic below for just a few examples. ?? Here’s the takeaway: mindset matters. If you believe someone is incompetent or uncommitted, you may start treating them that way—even unintentionally. As leaders, our role is to help people succeed until it's clear the fit isn’t right. By considering the various reasons someone might be struggling, you can shift your frustration to curiosity. Maybe you even have a conversation to help identify and address their roadblocks. This approach not only helps someone potentially worth 'saving' meet expectations, but it’s also kinder, fairer, and far more cost-effective for your business.
