Celebrating Senior Whole Health’s 20th Anniversary, 30 members of our team volunteered at Easterseals Massachusetts Bridge Center location. The Bridge Center, a fully accessible campus, offers children and adults with disabilities a variety of outdoor fields, a pond, an equestrian center and more. We organized common spaces to ensure they were well-equipped to serve the community. Following our volunteer work, we enjoyed lunch with the Easterseals team, celebrating our long-standing partnership. Easterseals is a transformational organization dedicated to promoting equity, inclusion and access for individuals with disabilities. With 1 in 4 adults in Massachusetts living with a disability, Easterseals plays a vital role in providing services that equip all Bay Staters with the tools to thrive. In celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, we sponsored an afternoon of entertainment for the residents of South Cove Plaza East! The Happy Garden Group delighted everyone with traditional Chinese dance performances while residents savored mooncakes and other favorite Chinese dishes, contributing to a potluck feast with their neighbors. Events like this play a crucial role in combating social isolation among seniors, a significant social determinant of health. The National Council on Aging has linked social isolation to high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, depression and more. We teamed up with The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) and WCVB Channel 5 Boston for the 6th Annual Day of Giving Fundraiser on Thursday, September 26! Our team worked the phone lines, helping raise funds to combat food insecurity for the fourth year in a row. Contributions from the telethon will help GBFB fill the fridge with fresh produce, dairy and protein. According to GBFB’s latest report, 1 in 5 seniors in Massachusetts experience food insecurity. As part of our commitment to addressing this issue, Senior Whole Health and GBFB have also partnered to bring GBFB’s Mobile Market directly to seniors at the New Bedford Housing Authority, Tripp Towers and Boa Vista Properties. We partnered with Coastal Foodshed to host two food distribution events at South Cove Plaza East and Essex Towers, bringing nutritious foods right to seniors’ doorsteps. During the South Cove Plaza East event, Chef Rhonda from Coastal Foodshed provided a live cooking demonstration, teaching over 50 residents how to make a tasty, healthy meal using the food supplied at the event. Between the two events, we distributed 160 boxes, totaling 892 pounds of local food! An estimated 1 in 11 seniors experience food insecurity, a disparity compounded by unique health challenges and barriers to transportation that can make it even more difficult for seniors to access fresh foods.
