Good news for tribal #cleanenergy projects! New federal rules aim to end tax confusion for tribally owned businesses and boost clean energy projects, potentially ending three decades of confusion around the tax status of tribally chartered businesses. Treasury and the IRS recently announced a proposed rule that would clarify that businesses wholly owned by one or more tribes would share those tribes’ tax-exempt status. The move would support tribal self-determination, explicitly making those tribal businesses eligible for clean energy “elective pay” (aka Direct Pay) tax credits — which would allow them to receive direct payments for investments in #renewableenergy projects.
An Illinois farmer had misgivings about solar panels taking up cropland. “The thought of taking productive farm ground out of production with solar panels was not, in my personal opinion, ideal,” he said. Now, he's paid to manage vegetation around the 100 MW array of solar panels that went online in early 2024 — with a herd of 500 sheep. #Agrivoltaics gave him that opportunity, changing his mind about the solar project. A great article highlighting the challenges Tribes and Native Nations face in deploying utility-scale #cleanenergy projects — and the solutions that are now emerging. Even with new funding opportunities, barriers stand in the way of Native communities who seek energy sovereignty and self-determination. The Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are helping to remove those barriers.

Amazing news from the Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy! The $100 million energy sovereignty fund they just announced aims to break down financial barriers that have long stalled tribal clean energy projects. The Indigenous Power and Light Fund will provide just-in-time grants to tribes for predevelopment expenses, match requirements, and more — unlocking billions of dollars available to tribes for clean energy development through the Inflation Reduction Act, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, and other legislation. This will be huge!
