??Who are we and what do we do? With more than a century of history behind us, there’s lots to learn about Sempervirens Fund, but our mission is simple: we preserve redwoods and their broader ecosystem through land stewardship. ?? Swipe through to learn what that means, and how you help to preserve tens of thousands of acres of natural California habitat!

    • "Who is Sempervirens Fund (and what do we do?)" transposed over a photo looking upward at giant redwood trees
    • Sempervirens Fund is California’s first land trust, est. in 1900. Since our founding, we've protected more than 36,000 acres of redwood forests in the Santa Cruz mountains and helped establish three state and two regional parks.
A land trust is a community-based non-profit that seeks to permanently protect land. We both acquire land directly or partner with willing landowners to conserve land through conservation easements. In addition, we help to manage and restore land once it has been protected.
    • Our mission is to protect and permanently preserve redwood forests, wildlife habitat, watersheds, and other important natural and scenic features of California’s Santa Cruz mountains, and to encourage public appreciation and enjoyment of this environment.

    • With your help, we're working to establish a large, interconnected, and protected network of healthy trees and streams, stretching across public and private lands.

    • Redwood forests should be wild, and able to support diverse and ecologically rich populations of native plants and animals.

“This acquisition not only protects valuable acreage of precious redwood forests, but it also connects with our work at Big Basin and throughout the region to make our forests more connected and resilient,” Sara Barth, executive director of Sempervirens Fund, said in the release. “We are not stopping here. Our plans include protecting even more acreage that abuts this newly-protected land. By connecting protected lands, we increase resilience against wildfire and support key plant and animal species.” You heard it here first: we are not stopping here! ??

"For about three years now, my primary care physician has been trying to put me on high blood pressure medicine. I politely declined every time until last month; I woke up in the middle of the night from heart palpitations, I just laid in bed, focused on my breathing, and my mind started to drift off into a redwood grove...." Learn about the extraordinary powers of redwoods with Verónica Silva-Miranda, a Latino Outdoors volunteer, who shares how she found healing in the forest in her photo essay: https://lnkd.in/g7JftZ9w

Our fire-damaged parks and habitats in the Santa Cruz mountains, need our help to recover from one of the biggest fires in California’s recorded history. Thanks to you and your fellow supporters reaching out to California’s leadership, Assembly Bill 2103 passed the State Assembly, Senate, and was nearly signed into law. Unfortunately, #AB2103 was vetoed this week. Like you, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin of the 28th Assembly District, who introduced the bill, championed it every step of the way. Together, we will continue protecting the crucial natural resources we all rely on in this critical moment. Will you please join us in thanking Assemblymember Gail Pellerin for her dedication and commitment to rebuilding our parks and protecting our recovering unique biodiverse habitats? Drop your gratitude here: https://lnkd.in/g8v-4FtR

Fungi often have cool names. The one seen here is a violet tooth polypore (Trichaptum biforme), and it's essential in our forests, even though it's rarely seen in the Santa Cruz mountains. It helps to break down decaying wood; this cleans the forest and helps nutrients to cycle back into the soil—an unglamorous but vital role in the ecosystem. Its violet edge helps differentiate it from the more common turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) but the color can fade as the mushroom ages. Read more about the fungi you might see in San Vicente Redwoods this coming fall and winter: https://lnkd.in/gb2rhE-z

September 28th is National Public Lands Day! As California’s first and oldest land trust, we helped establish and expand several state parks, including Big Basin Redwoods, Butano, and Castle Rock, among others. Public lands make the majesty of nature accessible to everyone, and help to preserve the redwood forests we hold so dear. Let us know how you’re celebrating public lands!

    • The same hiker walking down a forest path, dwarfed by the massive trunk of a redwood tree in the foreground of the photograph.
    • A landscape view of fog creeping into a valley, obscuring a wide forest of evergreen trees over a mountainous terrain in Castle Rock State Park.
    • A ground view photo of tall redwoods reaching up into the sky. The sun’s light peeks among the canopy, creating a colorful lens flare across the image.
