Starting with 2024 population estimates, the U.S. Census Bureau will include data on the rehabilitation of uninhabitable structures—previously condemned buildings—into its count of inhabitable housing units. This marks a significant shift from the Bureau’s prior focus solely on new construction permits, which limited recognition of restored properties. SEMCOG will update its Building Permit Collection form this month to allow communities to report rehabilitated units, ensuring these are recognized. To read more: https://lnkd.in/gjmzP8bh

Established within the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), this office will create Michigan’s first statewide economic transition plan.

SEMCOG’s Legislative Policy Platform Task Force met today to finalize the 2025-2026 Legislative Platform for Southeast Michigan. Thanks to Chairperson Frank Viviano, Supervisor, Macomb Township and Vice-Chair Robert McCraight, Mayor, Romulus, and all the Task Force members for their work on these policies. Next step is final approval by the Executive Committee at their meeting in December!

For many years, SEMCOG’s Executive Committee elections have taken place at March General Assembly meetings. However, we’re making a change!
