SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, is the only organization in Southeast Michigan that brings together all of the region’s governments to solve regional challenges. SEMCOG supports local planning through its technical, data, and intergovernmental resources. SEMCOG's plans improve the quality of the region's water, make the transportation system safe and more efficient, revitalize communities, and spur economic development.

Attendees elected Executive Committee Delegates and Alternates, took part in an information exchange, and learned about current and upcoming SEMCOG resources and funding opportunities. Thank you to everyone who joined today’s Executive Committee meeting! We had a productive discussion, including updates from Washington and Lansing, and took action on key items such as the approval of the 23/26 TIP Amendment 25-1 and the 2025-2026 Work Program. It’s always great to come together to work towards a connected and thriving Southeast Michigan.
Our outreach meetings this week in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties focused on the election of Executive Committee Delegates and Alternates. Attendees also participated in an information exchange, discussing local initiatives and issues. We shared updates on SEMCOG resources and regional funding opportunities. Excited to see Madison Heights featured in the Locals Lead initiative! This project was especially meaningful to me, as we worked to reimagine the Civic Center Plaza with renovations to City Hall and the Library, plus a brand-new Active Adult Center. Proud of how this project reflects the spirit and resilience of our community!
The Locals Lead initiative highlights the vital role of local leaders in our region’s success. As municipalities look to upgrade aging facilities, the City of Madison Heights serves as a prime example, with the Civic Center Plaza redevelopment that included renovations to City Hall and the Library, as well as a new Active Adult Center.
Traffic crashes and fatalities remain a persistent issue in Southeast Michigan, with one person killed every day and six more seriously injured. This ongoing tragedy is unacceptable. In partnership with the State of Michigan, Southeast Michigan has joined the Toward Zero Deaths initiative, committing to a future where no preventable death occurs on our roads. At SEMCOG’s "Adopting a Culture of Safety" webinar, we explored the importance of shifting our collective mindset and taking action to reduce fatalities and injuries. https://lnkd.in/gvmQ-uPJ
The 2025 Macomb Economic Forecast at Macomb Community College highlighted key topics like workforce development, manufacturing, mobility, and the ongoing industrial transformation in Macomb County. Since 1967, Oakland County, Michigan Government’s population has more than doubled. Its vehicle miles traveled (VMT) have more than quadrupled. Its traffic fatalities have also?reduced?to a quarter of their 1967 level. The fatality rate in Oakland County was 6.8 (per 100 million VMT) in 1967. Today, it is 0.44. This is less than half of Michigan’s rate (1.15), which is lower than the national average (1.35). The Road Commission for Oakland County stands out in the SEMCOG region and our nation for its safety success. This, of course, was no accident...
