As we get closer to what feels like one of the most important US presidential elections ever, it’s becoming harder to ignore the spooky boogeyman in the corner:?Project 2025. You’ve likely heard of the Republican playbook, and if there’s one thing the policies in this agenda could do, it’s affect your health and well-being. SELF's Senior Health Writer Katie Camero dug into all 922 pages of Project 2025 and consulted with policy experts to help you better understand how it could impact you, from higher drug prices to lifetime caps on Medicaid. And what we came away with is that it’s a recipe for disaster on the health front. To get the major takeaways that you should be aware of if the next Republican administration decides to adopt its policies, tap here: https://lnkd.in/etynSQaP

Nearly two years ago Julia Turshen sent SELF editor in chief Rachel Miller a note asking her for help finding an article from SELF’s archives. The piece was in the February 1998 issue and was titled “Good-bye, Fat Head: How I stopped my compulsive eating.” The author was Rochelle Udell, who was the the editor in chief of SELF from 1995-1999. Rochelle Udell also happens to be Julia Turshen's mother. The article was published just a few months before Turshen’s thirteenth birthday. She remembers when it came out and what a big deal it felt like in her household where being thin was seen as the holy grail. Turshen wanted to get a hold of the article while digging into the origins of her eating disorder. She ended up using it as a jumping-off point to have a new conversation with her mother—one that appears in her new cookbook, What Goes With What, and that SELF is proud to publish as an exclusive excerpt. To read Udell and Turshen’s raw and honest conversation, where they discuss healing from the impacts of diet culture and how their relationship has evolved, tap here: https://lnkd.in/e2eWRH_s

Although veneers have been a tool in dentists’ arsenals since the 1930s, they’re more gleamingly visible than ever, thanks to the procedure’s saturation on social media and the perfectly symmetrical teeth beaming out from celebrities’ faces. But are these augmented smiles too good to be true? It depends on who you trust with your mouth. To read more on what you can expect to pay for veneers and the major health risks that could follow, tap here: https://lnkd.in/g8yBZE38

Even if they hadn’t been standing in line waiting to flash their QR codes, the fans would have been easy to pick out. As they emerged from side streets and subway stations and made their way toward Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on September 8 to watch the NY LIBERTY take on the Las Vegas Aces, many wore oversized seafoam green jerseys that instantly identified them. Some had accessorized to match: basketball earrings, purses, and face paint; foam fingers and Statue of Liberty headpieces. Several girls even wore homemade bracelets or necklaces spelling out the names of their favorite players à la Swifties attending the Eras Tour. The September 9th game pulled an audience of 15,393, and father-daughter duos made up a not-insignificant portion of the crowd. Some dads told SELF they wanted an activity to do with their girls, while others say they are simply passionate about basketball in any form. Some dads felt that women’s sports had been historically overlooked and wanted to do their part to change that. “These games are a party for two hours,” Jeffrey, 44, told SELF, standing near an ice cream truck with his six-year-old daughter, Perry. “It’s a love fest, I think, for a young girl who loves sports, to see other women that are amazing at what they do and deserve our respect and appreciation.” For more exuberant photos and to read about what these father-daughter duos love most about the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), tap here: https://lnkd.in/etEDyRtX

Viral infections can sometimes lead to dangerous consequences. In Loree's case, it was heart failure. At age 39 and with two kids, she ended up having two open heart surgeries in less than a year. Fortunately, she was able to recover, but she has learned some lessons along the way that she's now on a mission to share with others. Here's her story for SELF Magazine.

If you were to peer into a ’90s time capsule, there’s a fair chance you’d find footage of Jennie Garth, and maybe while acting in one famous “Beverly Hills, 90210” scene in particular. Garth, who played Kelly Taylor on the iconic show, finds herself oh so classically torn between two hunky love interests. In a surprising twist, she kicks both puppy-dog-eyed beaus to the curb, confidently proclaiming, “I choose me.” Almost 30 years later, she’s still trying to be a role model particularly when it comes to some very relatable midlife health issues. Garth has been super transparent about her health ups and downs in the past decade, with a few sizable exceptions: She recently revealed exclusively to?SELF?that she underwent surgery to replace her left hip in 2020, followed by a procedure to replace her right hip in March 2024. While recovery for the first hip replacement went remarkably well, the second, Garth says, was debilitating and often incredibly disheartening. Garth felt embarrassment and shame at being seen as “old.” So, she kept those struggles, along with a heartbreaking IVF journey, a secret from her fans and even some of her closest family and friends—until now. Welcome to SELF’s annual Sneaker Awards! This year, 50 brands submitted 167 styles and at the end of our rigorous testing process, 30 winners came out on top—30 winners that we are thrilled to share with you. To choose the best of the best, SELF staffers slipped on nominated pairs for jogs, cardio dance classes, rugged hikes, races, leisurely dog walks, weightlifting sessions, and, for the very first time, tennis and pickleball matches. Each shoe was rated on a scale from 1 to 10 and graded using a range of criteria including fit, shape, feel, and style. All in all, the testing pool included marathoners, city planners, new parents, National Park service rangers, med students, manufacturing workers, engineers, and teachers—just to name a few. We chose winners that not only performed well for their intended activity, but also suited our testers’ feet, held up during multiple outings, and looked good too. After weeks of testing, everyone’s raves and rants were compiled into a final list of 30 all-around winners for all your running, walking, hiking, cycling, lifting, and bopping-around-town needs. Tap here to get the full list, and be sure to share your personal favorites in the comments below: https://lnkd.in/gtn2DPmn
