An incredible day on Sunday for the #PlantThePlanetGames2024! A wonderful celebration connecting the cultures of Ireland and Kenya through the universal languages of music and sport. There are so many people and organisations that made the third edition of the Plant the Planet Games such an amazing event - there are a lot of thank you’s to follow ?? To our GAA players from all over Ireland, taking a week out of your busy lives to be part of this special initiative means a lot - to see the impact of Self Help Africa’s work, and to fundraise an incredible amount to collectively plant more than one million trees in Kenya and beyond. We’re so grateful to each and every one of you. A huge thank you to the Gaelic Players Association for all the fantastic ongoing support and for once again getting behind the Games for the third year in a row - all that we’ve achieved so far wouldn’t have happened without you! We were honoured too, to have Ireland’s Ambassador to Kenya, Caitríona Ingoldsby, officially open the Games again this year. Our sincere thanks to the Irish Embassy team in Kenya for all the great support and hosting a brilliant reception for our players too and adding to this most special week of events. Delighted to welcome our long-time supporter Mary Lardner and O’Toole’s SuperValu Tuam on board this year as a sponsor - thank you so much for your extremely generous support over the years and for making this year’s Games such a success. Our brilliant Plant the Planet Games match day kit and team wear for the trip is with thanks to McKeever Sports - as you can see, everyone looks fantastic! Thank you as well, to Optimum Nutrition for the ongoing support for the Plant the Planet Games and ensuring a truly special match day experience! It’s not every day - the last time in fact was probably this time last year - you see GAA and soccer stars take to the pitch together! A big thank you to Kenyan Premier League football team AFC Leopards for taking part again this year, and to Strathmore University for hosting the Plant the Planet Games. Finally to Alan Kerins, the visionary behind the Games, now in its third year and continuing to build an unstoppable legacy. Alan, the Plant the Planet Games are a testament to your truly special gift for bringing people together. Self Help Africa are so proud to partner with you and Warriors for Humanity, to achieve incredible impact together! Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. It is estimated that 736 million women around the world have experienced at least one form of violence. Today is the International Day to End Violence Against Women - and also the beginning of the 16 Days Against Gender-Based Violence UNiTE campaign. It is crucial to address and improve the unequal power dynamics between men and women and boys and girls within families and society. As a member organisation of the Irish Consortium on Gender Based Violence (ICGBV), we recognise that gender based violence prevention plays a vital role in our work. At Self Help Africa, our programmes show that when women and girls are empowered, the wellbeing of the entire household increases, and gender-based violence is reduced, as women are encouraged to claim their power, and men to share theirs. We use the ‘Challenging Tree’ to examine the root causes (root), symptoms (trunk) and solutions (branches) to gender-based violence - drawing on the Gender Action Learning Systems methodology to reduce violence in the home and community. Today and every day, let’s continue to increase women’s voice, choice and control: particularly their voice within the household, women’s decision-making, and control over their own lives. Learn more about the vital work of the ICGBV here:?https://www.gbv.ie/

There are multiple benefits to the simple clay cook stoves that Adeere Nalunga manufactures as a member of a women’s enterprise group in southern Malawi. ?? The stoves that Adeere makes burn hotter and cleaner than traditional open fire cooking, and require up to 70% less wood or charcoal. ?? The impact? Less deforestation, fewer carbon emissions, and less time spent by families gathering fuel wood. #women #climateaction #clay #deforestation #carbonemissions

3.5 billion people worldwide still live without safely managed sanitation. ???? Today, on UN 'World Toilet Day' we're highlighting the health risk that poor sanitation poses for over 40% of the global population. Self Help Africa Water and Sanitation (WASH) programmes are addressing that challenge across sub-Saharan Africa, providing communities with better toilets as a route to improving community hygiene and health. In the past three years, our WASH programme has supported the construction of almost 30,000 latrines, and has assisted more than 340 communities to become open defecation free. People like Bridget have seen life-changing impacts through these interventions. She and many others are making sure the toilets in their community are safe and clean to use. ?? ‘Safe toilets for all by 2030’ is one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – but the world is seriously off track. On World Toilet Day we join the call on governments worldwide to ensure that sanitation and water services are resilient, effective and accessible to everyone. #WorldToiletDay #ToiletsForPeace #SDG6 #WASH #SelfHelpAfrica
