Uganda launches its National Self-Care Guideline on Self Care Interventions for Health and Well-Being at the 2024 National Safe Motherhood Conference in Kampala! Over the past four years, the Ministry of Health - Uganda, in collaboration with the Self-Care Expert Group contextualized the World Health Organization (WHO) Consolidated Guideline on Self-Care Interventions for Health — expanding it beyond sexual and reproductive health to include essential areas like non-communicable diseases and malaria. SCTG provided essential evidence frameworks on quality of care, social and behavioral change, and self-care measurement, guiding the development and implementation of this groundbreaking guideline. As a trailblazer country, Uganda is leading the way in institutionalizing self-care within its health system — a critical step toward achieving #UniversalHealthCoverage. This milestone was made possible with funding support from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Self-Care Trailblazer Group, Population Services International, World Health Organization, and Planned Parenthood, and the contributions of the Self Care Experts Group, led by CEHURD Uganda. This collaborative effort includes esteemed partners such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), USAID, PATH, Makerere University, FHI 360, Samasha Medical Foundation, Living Goods, Marie Stopes Uganda, Reproductive Health Uganda, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., Mildmay Uganda, Reach A Hand Uganda, Public Health Ambassadors Uganda-PHAU, International Rescue Committee, Tekere Girlchild Empowerment (TEGEM), ERIC CANCER INITIATIVE LIMITED, Uganda Youth Alliance for Family Planning and Adolescent Health, and Mukono District Local Government. Congratulations Uganda!

Self-Care for Universal Health Coverage
关于我们
Self-care is the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health-care provider. When made accessible and affordable, self-care interventions have the potential to increase individuals’ autonomy and self-efficacy in making decisions about their own care, strengthen countries’ health systems, and ultimately pave the way toward universal health coverage. Self-care interventions also help create more equity. Women and girls are often disadvantaged compared to men regarding their access to quality health care. Self-care aims to redress this imbalance by enabling an equal, practical environment for everyone to access the SRHR care they require. Done well, self-care offers a pathway to meeting the demand for quality health care for all people. When all individuals are given the opportunity to become active, empowered agents in their health, this will ultimately lead to improved health outcomes and contribute to the achievement of universal health coverage and other global milestones. Self-care is a critical pathway to achieving global development objectives set out in Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 5; Family Planning 2020; UNAIDS’ 90-90-90; and the WHO’s “triple billion” initiative at the heart of its new five-year strategic plan. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the need for and benefits of self-care. The WHO’s Consolidated Guideline on Self-Care Interventions for SRHR, published June 24th, covers people-centered, evidence-based recommendations for key self-care interventions for SRHR and has been a pivotal moment for the SRHR community.

Population Services International's Self-Care Trailblazer Group (SCTG) is dedicated to expanding safe and effective self-care practices, equipping individuals to manage their own health, improving health outcomes, and strengthening health systems to achieve universal health coverage.? ?? This work would not be possible without the generous contributions from our funders and coalition partners across the globe. Thanks to an additional $500K grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation—bringing their total support to $1.5M over the next three years—and $3M from Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), we are moving self-care from policy to practice. Together, we are scaling up efforts across regions, including in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and Uganda, with plans to move to Zambia, enhancing engagement with francophone countries, building partnerships with professional health associations, and advancing advocacy for a World Health Organization resolution on self-care in 2025. ?? Thank you, Hewlett Foundation and CIFF, for your commitment to making self-care a global reality.
