Big news in maternal mental health! ?? Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS has launched a nationwide public awareness campaign to promote the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 1-833-TLC-MAMA. The hotline offers free, confidential, 24/7 support to pregnant women and new moms navigating the challenges of #pregnancy, #postpartum, and #parenting. The campaign will partner with grocery stores, pharmacies, hospitals, and community organizations nationwide to make essential resources readily available in everyday settings. Public health initiatives like this are crucial to reducing stigma, ensuring equitable access to care, and supporting families in vulnerable moments. At Seleni Institute, we applaud this campaign and encourage everyone to spread the word about this lifeline. Together, we can make mental health support accessible for every parent. Premature birth impacts 1 in 10 babies in the U.S., often bringing challenges that affect not only physical health but also emotional wellbeing for families. This powerful story from March of Dimes highlights the devastating impact of #pretermbirth, especially for Black women, who face a 55% higher preterm birth rate and are 2.4 times more likely to lose their babies compared to White women. Ashley O’Neil’s experience underscores the urgent need for equitable #maternal healthcare in the U.S. Despite her tragic loss and continued challenges, she advocates tirelessly to raise awareness and inspire hope for families in similar situations. At Seleni, we stand with Ashley and March of Dimes in their mission to close the #healthequity gap, prevent preterm births, and improve maternal and infant health outcomes. Together, we can help ensure that all mothers and babies receive the care they deserve. Join us in supporting these efforts during #PrematurityAwarenessMonth and take action by urging legislators to pass the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2023: https://p2a.co/kyzgeg7 #PrematurityAwarenessMonth #PretermBirth #MaternalMentalHealth #SeleniInstitute #SupportFamilies #MarchOfDimes #SeleniMission #MaternalMentalHealthOutcomes #MMHMatters
Ashley O’Neil was happily 21 weeks #pregnant when she woke up from a nap to study—she was in nurse practitioner school. She was suddenly experiencing vaginal bleeding, and called the OB-GYN, who told her to just monitor it. However, it was getting worse. She and her husband, Jorge, went to the ER and Ashley was immediately brought up to the labor and delivery unit. Within seconds, her world was turned upside down. The small community hospital didn’t have the resources to handle such an early #pretermbirth. After a frantic ground transfer during a storm to a hospital nearly two hours away, their son Vinson was born. Tragically, he passed away shortly after birth. For a wealthy country, the US is a dangerous place for childbirth—but it’s not equally risky for all moms and babies. Black women experience a preterm birth rate 55% higher than other women, with their babies 2.4 times more likely to die compared to White women. These statistics highlight alarming trends and health equity gaps, endangering Black women's well-being. Two years later, Ashley and Jorge tried for another baby. After undergoing IVF, Ashley became pregnant with Kolin in early 2019. “Because of my previous loss, I was more closely monitored while I was pregnant with Kolin,” Ashley says. Despite these efforts, Ashley went into preterm labor at 24 weeks. She had an emergency Cesarean delivery, yet faced another crisis because the small community hospital was unprepared for her baby’s fragile condition. Kolin’s journey has been full of therapy sessions, medical procedures, and multiple hospital stays. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease, food allergies, seizures, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Just seven months after Kolin came home from the NICU, tragedy struck again when Jorge passed away, leaving Ashley to navigate the challenges of single parenthood. “Seeing Kolin’s fight and progress, despite the struggles, gives me strength,” Ashley shared. Today, Ashley actively supports March of Dimes for our work to end preventable maternal health risks, end preterm birth and infant death, and close the health equity gap. She inspires others with her strength, determination, and advocacy, and continues to raise awareness and offer hope to families facing similar trials. You, too, can advocate for moms and babies this #PrematurityAwarenessMonth. Call on legislators to pass The #PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2023. Take action at https://p2a.co/kyzgeg7 #BlanketChange
