After being found unresponsive at home, 67-year-old retired U.S. Air Force veteran Roy McMillan was rushed to the hospital. There, he went into cardiac arrest. “I tell people it’s the night he died,” said Roy’s wife, Melvin. Roy was resuscitated, connected to a ventilator and for the next 140 days, battled life-threatening complications as he moved among different facilities. Then Roy and his family learned of Inova Specialty Hospital, a critical illness recovery hospital. The physician-led team created a comprehensive treatment plan and, just 19 days later, Roy went home, able to breathe, eat, walk and talk on his own again. Did you know that our hospitals use an invisible solution during hygiene training? Our teams understand the importance of hand washing so we use a solution to help identify ways to improve technique. It is invisible to the naked eye and requires ultraviolet light to see. Through this approach, clinicians increase their knowledge and awareness of best handwashing practices. #HealthcareQualityWeek

Respiratory therapists care for patients with lung conditions. For Respiratory Care Week, we’re drawing attention to their techniques that help patients breathe better. Normal breathing occurs by inhaling through the nose and mouth. Depending on the condition, patients may require supplemental oxygen to breathe while others may have a tracheostomy tube (trach) surgically inserted into the trachea (windpipe). The trach is a more comfortable solution for long-term ventilator dependence. When a trach is in use, air enters and exits the body through the tracheostomy in the neck. If a ventilator is in use, the vent will control the amount of air received into the lungs and the minimum number of breaths. If a patient is having trouble talking, a speaking valve can be attached to a patient's trach. It allows air in through the trach but forces it out over the patient's vocal cords, allowing them to speak. #respiratorycareweek #respiratorytherapists #rcweek24

Our pharmacists use advanced technology to ensure the efficient and accurate delivery of medication. The provider’s order goes directly to the pharmacist for verification and dispensing, eliminating paper charts and phone calls. #PharmacyWeek

Respiratory Care Week is observed the third week of every October. Organized by the American Association for Respiratory Care, the observance highlights the critical role respiratory therapists (RT) and health care professionals play in managing and treating respiratory diseases in patients with pulmonary conditions. Our RTs specialize in ventilator liberation—helping people return to breathing on their own without mechanical support. Our nationwide network of hospitals treat more than 22,000 respiratory patients annually. Find out how our RTs and the wider interdisciplinary team care for our patients: https://bit.ly/3Yy1JRN #respiratorycareweek #respiratorytherapists #rcweek24

All hospital pharmacists are available 24/7, offering face-to-face counseling and personalized education. The pharmacy staff coordinates with the interdisciplinary team to provide discharge counseling and ensure a smooth transition. Individualized education and medication lists are given to all patients upon discharge. #PharmacyWeek
