Why is no one talking about why Duolingo’s social media marketing actual works. It's not the owl or Dua Lipa jokes. It's not the trending sounds. It's not even their tens of millions in marketing budget. It's because the people who make the content ARE the approvers. Read that again. Their social team can get posts up in immediately during major moments. No red tape. No "let me run this by legal real quick." Their most viral hits came from L1s and L2s on the team. The actual people doing the work. Meanwhile, somewhere else their competitors are doing this instead: - Making social report to PR - Needing 3 approvals for a tweet - Taking 2 weeks to "align on messaging" - Watering everything down to be "safe" - Killing any personality in editing - Wondering why nothing works Believe it or not I get. Social media feels scary. One wrong post and boom ?? But you know what's scarier? Becoming irrelevant because your team is too afraid to do anything interesting. You can't go viral waiting for approvals. You can't build community with a committee. You can't win on social playing it safe. Fear is expensive. The best marketing happens when you hire good people and get out of their way.
