On a 5 acre farmstead in rural northwestern Indiana, lies an unassuming guest house - nestled into the surrounding trees and overlooking a field of wildflowers. As a complement to the main house, this 2,700 sf guesthouse is composed of three elemental volumes that share a simple gabled roof profile as a nod to their neighbors, the local shed vernacular. ? They are separated to maintain their individuality and pure form, but also to maximize daylight and views to nature. Connections between the elements appear as glass gaskets - each one is both a room and a threshold as you leave one element completely before entering the next. Each gabled volume has a series of nested layers: a solid white, tranquil volume contains the private spaces; a warm wood-clad lining wraps around the more public spaces; and both are packaged together in a protective charred cedar shell. The retreat offers comfort and protection to the visitors while it simultaneously immerses them into the surrounding? nature. We're happy to share that construction is well underway for the new Senso Sushi restaurant in downtown Frankfort, IL. Senso will be the anchor tenant in the new Old Plank Trail Commons development and provide another dining option within this community. The lofted ceiling expresses the wood trusses to create a modern, soothing, and inviting dining experience. The cherry blossom trees centered in the banquette creates a visual break and the 'cat wall' adds a playful moment. The bar is set back within the restaurant to create a distinguished backdrop for the restaurant. Thanks to Mookie L. for his vision for the restaurant concept and Integrus Construction & Development for the opportunity to design this building. Last night our office had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Chicago while listening to the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra perform George Gershwin under the iconic Millennium Park Bandshell. Having our significant others, along with our little ones (a total of 6 kids ranging from 7 years old to 2 months) made the evening even more special. We work hard every day to achieve great buildings, however, that’s only possible with the support of our loved ones. So grateful for this group of architects / husbands / wives / fathers / mothers! Earlier this week we had the opportunity to host a group of teenagers from Hood Heroes. As part of Legacy Disciple, Hood Heroes equips and employs Chicago's youth, offers career experience, engagement with the trades, and leadership development for those 11-21 years old. It was a fantastic opportunity to share with these youth what architects do and how we can use our God given talents to have lasting impact in the communities we call home.
