According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home cooking fires spike substantially during Thanksgiving Day. The main culprit? Unattended cooking. Share our tips with your Insureds to prevent unnecessary fire claims! DOs: ? Keep children at least 3 feet from the stove and oven. ? Make sure your smoke detectors are working, and you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. ? Be mindful of electrical cords, including extension cords and electrical cooker cords. Make sure they are out of the way to avoid tripping hazards and aren’t in areas where they can get wet. Do not plug extension cords into each other. ? If a pot handle is hot, turn off the stove and place a kitchen towel on the handle so people won’t accidentally burn themselves. DON’Ts: ? Do not leave items on the stove or in the oven unattended. ? Avoid putting a frozen or partially frozen turkey in a frier. ? Do not fry a turkey inside or near flammable hazards. Instead, set up your frying station outside on even pavement. ? Resist over-stuffing your oven. Not only can this cause uneven cooking, but items may also spill and burn. Check items frequently. ? Do not heat a pot on high heat without something in the pot. - #SMG #securitymutual #homeowners #homeinsurance #homeownertips #insuranceagent #thanksgivingtips #firesafety

Security Mutual Group President/CEO Ron Wilder (right) and Lisa Kanellis, Secretary & Treasurer (left) hit the road again and met with Aly Evans (middle), Executive Director of Foodnet Meals on Wheels, to present a $10,000 donation! We were impressed by Foodnet's extensive outreach, as they deliver 140,000 meals each year and serve over 600 clients in the Tompkins County area with daily meals. Foodnet provides healthy meal delivery, offering hot, balanced, and nutritious meals to clients who are unable to shop for or prepare food for themselves. Additionally, the drivers do more than just deliver meals; they check in with each client at every delivery and can call for help if needed. Security Mutual group is very grateful for the service they provide in our area. Did you know that falling trees are one of the top causes of personal liability claims in New York? If a tree or branch falls and injures a guest or damages someone’s property (e.g., your neighbor’s fence, a parked car in your driveway, etc.), you could be liable for the damages. The solution? Prune your trees in the fall when they are dormant to limit hazards and avoid winter damage! Look out for: ?? Dead trees, which inevitably fall from rot ?? Overgrown branches can hinder visibility and fall when weakened ?? Snow storms can weigh down branches with ice and snow. Visit Security Mutual to learn about personal liability coverage, included in our homeowner insurance policies! - #securitymutual #SMG #nyinsurance #insurance #insuranceagent #homeowners #personalliability #treeremoval
