Following Japan’s October 27th election, the long-standing political stability of the ruling LDP-Komeito coalition has come to a halt, with the coalition losing its majority in the Diet’s lower house. Against this backdrop, Security & Defence PLuS Research Lead at King's College London, Professor Alessio Patalano (Department of War Studies), raises two critical questions: First, to what extent is the continuity and stability of Japanese defence and security policy of the past decade likely to be affected by the country’s current political transition? Second, what will the political costs be to defence and security policy as Ishiba attempts to create a wider coalition?
In this Memorandum, Alessio Patalano examines the impact of the #Japanelection on Japanese security policy in the region ?? ??? ‘The electoral results raise a key question as to whether Japanese politics has entered a period of turbulence and fluidity.’ You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dTYq86SY #BritainsWorld #Memorandum

In the November issue of?Defence Technology Review, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, PhD, explains how Australia’s future Land-Based Maritime Strike (LBMS) capability, central to the 2024 National Defence Strategy, is set to fill critical maritime strike gaps as the Collins-class submarines undergo life-of-type extension (LOTE). “LBMS assets can fill critical gaps, providing defensive and offensive capabilities to safeguard national interests and project power into the region,” he notes, emphasising the role LBMS will play in securing Australia’s sea lanes and coastal approaches. We were delighted to welcome experts from defence and security including Vice Admiral Andy Kyte CB FCILT and Paul Larcey Innovate UK, to feed into a project with Prof Rym M'Hallah and Dr Hassan Turan aiming to design more resilient supply chains. The workshop enabled Rym and Hassan to better understand the challenges faced by industry and UK defence to help inform and model a data-informed framework, which they hope will make supply chains more agile, resilient, robust and scalable. “This workshop at King’s provided a valuable opportunity to bring key stakeholders together to better understand how we can use a systems approach and harness new technologies to enhance logistics and supply chain management for defence.” - Vice-Admiral Andy Kyte Find out more ?? https://loom.ly/d_6lYW4
