Europe’s mineral resources have become a battleground for global power. Plans to secure and develop Ukraine’s resources must be part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the country’s short- and long-term national security and economic reconstruction, with strong involvement of Western players. This weekend, EIES | European Initiative for Energy Security and SAFE's Center for Critical Minerals Strategy held a private dinner on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference with European and North American leaders at the intersection of defence, energy, finance and the minerals sector to discuss the role of mineral supply chains and recycling in strengthening Europe’s military and civilian industrial base. Key takeaways include: ??The success of defence agencies’ policies depends on market structure and demand dynamics.??? ??Defence agencies must intervene directly to ensure supply chain security when addressing critical minerals with low commercial demand.?? ??Strengthening critical mineral supply chains requires recognising the linkages between civilian and military applications and ensuring that strategies benefit both uses.?? ??Recycling plays an important role in strengthening domestic supply chains and reducing dependence on imports.
