12,000 API Keys and Passwords Found in AI Training Data! ?? A recent investigation uncovered nearly 12,000 valid API keys and passwords embedded in the Common Crawl dataset, a crucial resource for training AI models. These secrets, including AWS root keys, MailChimp API keys, and Slack webhooks, were exposed in public web data used by major AI players like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and others. 1,500+ MailChimp API keys hardcoded in HTML/JS, leaving users vulnerable to phishing and brand impersonation. AWS root keys found in the front-end code potentially grant unauthorized access to cloud resources. WalkScore API key appearing 57,000+ times across subdomains—illustrating the risks of credential reuse. Even with AI’s data-cleaning processes, sensitive information like credentials can slip through and get incorporated into models. This can lead to unintended security vulnerabilities and ethical concerns about how AI is trained. Never hardcode credentials in code—use environment variables instead. Implement automatic scans for exposed secrets. Rotate and revoke compromised keys immediately. This incident highlights the need for stronger security practices and better data hygiene as AI continues to shape the future of technology.
