1,800 organizations, including Second Helpings.
??Over 1,800 organizations have signed on to a letter urging Congress to reject devastating cuts to SNAP and school meals. These programs are lifelines for millions—cuts would mean more hunger, worse health outcomes, and economic harm. Read the full release: https://bit.ly/4kv5Eri

Just yesterday our talented Hunger Relief team made a 35 gallon batch of blueberry jam from gorgeous berries rescued by our Food Rescue team. Our Culinary Job Training students are using some of that jam for their breakfast cooking exercise this week. The rest will be used by our volunteers to make nutritious peanut butter and homemade jam (no preservatives and less sugar) sandwiches that will be distributed by our partner organizations to the community. How great is that?
Americans throw away an enormous amount of food – an average of one pound of food each day for every man, woman and child in the country. That’s around 30% of our available food supply going directly into the trash (according to the US Food & Drug Administration). To reduce food waste in central Indiana, Second Helpings rescues thousands of pounds of food every day from donors across the foodservice industry. Important new food waste data from our friends at ReFED today. While we are here at Second Helpings trying to do our part to divert millions of pounds of food waste, the problem is SO much bigger than many of us imagine.
???? NEW REPORT! Introducing "From Surplus to Solutions: 2025 ReFED U.S. Food Waste Report," featuring the latest data on the progress, trends, and remaining challenges in reducing food loss and waste in the United States. The report outlines that while we have seen significant momentum in preventing and reducing food from going to waste—and the foundation for progress has been laid—waste remains stubbornly high. Key findings include: ?? Even with increasing food costs, consumers continue to generate the largest amount of waste. Between uneaten groceries at home and restaurant plate waste, consumers waste close to 35 million tons of food annually, costing them $261 billion, or nearly $800 per person. ?? While food producers and businesses generate 21.5 million tons of surplus food annually equating to $108 billion in lost revenue, momentum to address waste is building, with 20% of the top 65 food businesses across foodservice, retail, and manufacturing having specific, time-bound food waste reduction targets. ?? A $16 billion annual investment over a ten-year period in the 45 food waste solutions that ReFED has modeled could create a net financial benefit of $60.8 billion—a 3.8x return—while diverting 20 million tons of surplus food from the landfill and avoiding 79 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
