Nyx is a mother of two living with a permanent disability that affects her ability to work. "If we don't come here every week, we don't have a lot to eat," shared Nyx. "I get eggs, milk, fresh fruits, and vegetables that we can't afford. With the food prices, there's no way I can make do. It's really, really difficult." Families often find themselves choosing between paying for medical expenses, utilities, and rent or providing enough nutritious food for their loved ones. Nyx’s experience underscores a growing issue that has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and rising inflation. Nyx went on to say: "It's very hard to ask for help, but it's not degrading to come here. I don't feel ashamed. Getting this food means the world to me." #nourishfirst

On this day in 1986, the doors of Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin opened for the first time, marking the start of our mission to end hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. Over the past 39 years, we’ve experienced incredible growth, all made possible by YOU—our amazing supporters, volunteers, and partners. Here’s to many more years of ensuring everyone in our community has equal access to the nutritious, affordable, and culturally meaningful food they need to THRIVE.
