  • *The re-scheduled African American Read-In is here tomorrow, Sunday 3/9, from 3-4:30!* We've had a few question about what the African-American Read-In on Sunday looks like. Well, I would love to tell you! ? Community members will be reading from their favorite works written by African or African American writers. ? That includes you, if you have a favorite that you want to share! ? If you want to share, readings are limited to a maximum time of 3 minutes. Also, please make sure your selection is family friendly. ? If you don't want to share, you're still welcome to come and listen! You might hear an old favorite, you might hear a new favorite. You never know! Hosted by our friends at Zawadi Books and in partnership with Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of WNY and Second Chapter Bookstore. #Buffalo #BuffaloNY #Books #Reading

Organization Steps Up to Guard Black-Owned Bookstore ????♂????? In the 1960s and '70s, Black-owned bookstores were routinely targeted; yet the owners persisted, serving as safe spaces for political re-education and community gathering. Unfortunately, this made them targets, and the FBI's COINTELPRO operation worked to infiltrate, disrupt, harass, and eventually destroy "radical and leftist bookstores." Fast forward to today, and the struggle continues. In Farmers Branch, Texas, BLACKLIT—the first Black-owned bookstore in the area—was forced to close its doors after owner Nia Tayler-Clark faced months of intimidation, harassment, and inadequate support from local authorities. Similarly, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Liberation Station Bookstore, the state's first Black-owned children's bookstore, had to relocate due to numerous threats. The safety concerns had escalated to the point where the owner felt compelled to move to protect her family and patrons, just as Nia did. However, in Baltimore, the Tendea Family stepped up to safeguard the Urban Reads Bookstore and its owner from similar threats. The Tendea Family is a grassroots organization started in 2015 after the death of Freddy Gray. Its aim is to empower the city's Black community by operating programs focused on identity, self improvement, community service, and development. Kudos for stepping up and providing other much-needed services to the BMore community. Check out their organization here: https://lnkd.in/eRwCsRXA I asked the founder, Elijah, if we could donate and he provided his CashApp and PayPal. But I don't do PayPal. Disrupting inequity through books, antiracism, and workforce development.

Over the weekend I was honored to co-moderate a discussion with award-winning activist and author, Tamika D. Mallory, at the 2nd annual Changemakehers Brunch. We discussed her newest book, I Lived to Tell the Story: A Memoir of Love, Legacy, and Resilience, and walked away with SO many gems. ? In this fight for justice, we need all hands on deck — the Malcoms and the Martins and everyone in between. And you don’t need to be on the frontline to be an activist. We need nurturers, too. Get in where you fit in. ?Check on your strong friends and show up for them in practical ways. ? We don’t need to be besties but we DO need to be in community — our shared humanity demands collective action. ? Sit at the feet of your elders. They have so much wisdom to share and too often, we disregard them and their experiences because we’re too busy and moving too fast. We need them more than we realize. ? This work can be all-consuming, but we must figure out how to be present for our children, our families, and most importantly, ourselves. Jamil, thank you for creating this platform to give women their flowers, and I appreciate how you bring elevated events to our community. What a beautiful way to end Black History Month and begin the celebration of women in March. #Books #BookDiscussion #Activism #BlackAuthors #WomensHistoryMonth
