The thornforests of the Lower Rio Grande Valley are a biodiverse sanctuary that provide crucial habitat for numerous species including the only known U.S. population of ocelots, but, today, less than 10% of thornforests remain. Thankfully, a critical effort to restore these decimated native forests takes place each year – and it couldn’t be done without the South Texans who call this region home. This World Environment Day we've been out checking in on our hives ???? Did you know that habitat loss is generally thought to be the most important factor driving the decline in population of UK pollinators? Over 97% (an area the size of Wales) of all flower-rich grasslands have been lost in England since the 1930s, (and this is mirrored in other parts of the UK) reducing pollen and nectar sources and leading to a serious decline in the wildlife depending on wildflower-rich habitat. UK Charity Buglife's B-Lines Project is an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that weaves across the UK landscape. This provides large areas of brand new habitat benefiting bees and butterflies– but also a host of other wildlife. If you're looking for a charity to support that directly helps re-build our pollinator habitat then Buglife might be the one for you! For more information about B-Lines and the work that Buglife do to help pollinators head over to their site www.buglife.org.uk

????Community collaboration is leading the charge in Koala conservation Landcare Australia is an active part of the SACG National Koala Recovery Team’s Strategy and Coordination group (SACG) which is strengthening collaboration across regions and borders between key partners in koala conservation. In February 2022, the koala (combined populations of Qld, NSW and the ACT) was listed as endangered. In April 2022, the National Recovery Plan published a 10-year time frame which brings together First Nations people, government, community groups, non-government organisations and scientists with a common purpose: to stop the decline in the population size of the listed koala. This 2024 annual report from the National Koala Recovery Team paints a bleak picture of a threatened unique and iconic species in decline. However, community led projects, like our WildSeek partnership with WIRES Inc and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) is collecting robust data to be inputted into the national database. This means we will we have a much better idea of where to focus habitat protection and recovery efforts for the Koala so they can recover, survive and thrive! ???? #KoalaConservation #SaveTheKoalas #EndangeredSpecies #WildlifeProtection #CommunityCollaboration #WildSeek #WIRES #QUT #HabitatProtection #ConservationEfforts #NatureConservation#LandcareAustralia #KoalaRecovery

Canada’s prairie grasslands are home to diverse wildlife, including more than 60 at risk species. Yet, Canada’s grasslands are one of the world’s most endangered and least protected ecosystems, with over 60 thousand hectares, or 100,000 football fields lost every year.?Landscape conversion and human activity have contributed toward the decline of this vital ecosystem, which has the unique potential to simultaneously sequester carbon, filter water and feed communities across the country. That’s why we have invested $30M over 5 years toward supporting evidence-based management and on the ground conservation. This #NationalGrasslandsAwarenessWeek (USA), join us in celebrating our Prairie Grasslands Initiative grantees Ducks Unlimited Canada Nature Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada @Parks Canada Meewasin Valley Authority and Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation for work they continue to do in protecting and sustaining this important habitat. Today, we’re announcing we’re scaling up our partnership with Village Enterprise after nearly a decade of working together. Across sub-Saharan Africa, communities living on the fringes of national parks and protected areas often find themselves in a desperate situation. With limited economic opportunities to provide for their families, many turn to hunting endangered species or engaging in illegal extractive activities. Our collaboration with Village Enterprise is focused on creating a #sustainable future where both people and wildlife can thrive. By involving Indigenous Peoples and local communities in conservation efforts and equipping them with resources and training to launch climate-friendly #microbusinesses, we are planting the seeds for long-term change. It “demonstrates how successful #conservation can be when local communities are at the forefront of the effort,” said Emma Stokes, WCS’s Vice President for Field Conservation.
