Seattle Adaptive Sports

Seattle Adaptive Sports (SAS) is Western Washington’s leading adaptive sports organization and is recognized by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Since 1970, Seattle Adaptive Sports has existed in various iterations to serve as a resource for physically disabled community members to engage in advocacy and educational opportunities in personal fitness and public health. Seattle Adaptive Sports offers four Paralympic sports: wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, power soccer, and goalball, and an annual community awareness event called Paralympic Sports Day. SAS serves over 150 participants annually, ages 6 and up, in King County and the Puget Sound region and partners with area hospitals, non-profits, schools, and parks and recreation departments to increase access to fitness, wellness and educational opportunities. Programs are designed for individuals with a permanent physical disability that precludes them from participating in traditional sports and athletics without modifications. Physical disabilities could include amputation, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, joint damage, severe scoliosis, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, traumatic brain injury, blindness or low vision, and other congenital or acquired conditions that affect mobility. SAS is a member-driven organization that recognizes sports participation as a powerful vehicle for personal growth and development. Members/athletes are board members, coaches, collegiate athletes, community mentors, professionals, and disability rights advocates. Seattle Adaptive Sports aims to increase access to and affordability of not only the fitness and wellness programs currently offered, but to serve as a regional hub and resource that connects participants and the greater community with opportunities to compete, learn, grow, advocate, and achieve the wellness they desire.
