What’s in a name? The name Finance and Administrative Services may conjure an image of people sitting at desks, crunching numbers, creating budgets, looking after the City’s financial resources and any number of other behind the scenes work that may not sound exciting and glamorous, but is necessary. But there’s a reason why FAS is sometimes referred to as “the department of everything”. Behind the name is an organization of 450+ diverse individuals doing everything from processing passport requests to repairing fire trucks to caring for stray and lost animals and so much more. The wide scope of operations and types of jobs in FAS make it a great place to start or continue your City career. Earlier this week I visited FAS' Tire Shop and got to see some of our amazing and talented Equipment Servicers in action. Far from just changing tires, these guys are highly skilled technicians who work on vehicles ranging from a Nissan Leaf to motorcycles to fire vehicles to the biggest of all - the Condor, which has a 200 foot bucket lift. Each vehicle has unique specs and often there are no manuals to consult, making repair and support even more challenging. I gained a deep respect and appreciation for the physical, analytical and intellectual skills needed to become a master of the trade. FAS and the City is fortunate to have such a skilled, efficient and cohesive team working together to keep the City's fleet vehicles safe and productive.
