Exciting news for Seattle's music community! ?? The Seattle City Council passed groundbreaking legislation prioritizing parking for musicians and their crews at live music venues! ???? The new law will support our vibrant music scene with Music Venue Zone Permits and designated "Music Venue Zones"! The permits create up to three spaces per venue and will allow for convenient parking and loading around the clock, every day of the week, while displaying a valid permit. ???? The Music Venue Zones aims to support artists and their crews by making it easier for artists to perform and thrive, and to support music venues which will enhance our vibrant music scene and boost economic development. ? Proud to be part of this collaboration with the Seattle Department of Transportation and the Seattle Music Commission to transform the parking and loading experience for our city's venues and musicians! Big week for Seattle Department of Transportation as we continue to build on the success of our U.S. Department of Transportation SMART Grant project to improve our commercial vehicle load zone program with the Urban Freight Lab + Cambridge Systematics, Inc.. This week we installed IPS Group, Inc. smart parking meters to collect on-going load zone utilization data and we will soon provide real-time availability of loading space to delivery drivers in #CDS format by the Open Mobility Foundation with help from CurbIQ. This project has been a huge lift but I’m really proud of the work we’ve done and will continue to do in the months ahead. Lots of great photos from install day on a sunny day in Seattle! I’m a music lover and over the past year, I've had the pleasure of working to improve Seattle's live music industry. I'm thrilled to share that yesterday, the Seattle City Council unanimously passed Seattle Department of Transportation's innovative, first in the nation legislation that will support Seattle’s music industry with a new permit program that will improve artist parking and loading at music venues. For years, SDOT has heard from venues that loading music gear and parking artist vehicles are critical to putting on live music. Over the past year, I collaborated with the Seattle Office of Economic Development and the Seattle Music Commission to learn more about the challenges that the lack of reliable on-street parking and loading space for artists have on music venue operations. Survey responses from over 300 local musicians and venues further highlighted the realities that touring musicians and venues face when putting on live music: ??“I often worry about parking as much as the gig itself!” ??"If we can’t get our gear in, we can’t play." ??“We need room to park semis, buses, trailers, vans… this is what makes the music happen!” ??"We usually spend 1/4 of the money we made [from a gig] on parking." ??"THIS is rock and roll. You [SDOT] are dealing with rock and roll." (which also happens to be the best public comment I've received on a project ??) Using this feedback, we developed a new Music Venue Zone Permit program. Qualifying venues will be able to apply for one permit each, and each permit would allow up to three Music Venue Zones zones that will allow parking and loading for artists and their associated crews 24/7. Find your way to public art in the heart of the city by local artists ?? In Belltown, our recently installed sidewalk decals guide visitors to some of Seattle's newest public art. These murals by local artists are part of the Hope Corps Downtown Mural Project (which has helped fund and install more than 30 murals throughout downtown). On the second Friday of every month, the Belltown Art Walk (6-9 PM) is a great way to check out art in Belltown. It’s a free, self-guided, all-ages event hosted by a volunteer-and-donations-driven nonprofit charity serving artists, the community, and the Belltown neighborhood. Feeling more independent? You can enjoy the murals on your own schedule via a new walking route we’ve laid out in Belltown. Today, officials from the City of Seattle, Federal Transit Administration, King County Metro, Sound Transit, WSDOT, and other partners celebrated the completion of the RapidRide G Line–Madison St Project at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Capitol Hill. Details and more info on the SDOT blog: https://lnkd.in/gYWGD4yi This marks the culmination of a major and complex capital project to maintain & modernize Madison St. This project fixed sidewalks, added new walk and bike signals, rebuilt utilities, and created a street design to keep traffic at slower, safer speeds next to schools, small businesses, libraries, and hospitals. King County Metro’s new RapidRide G Line bus service begins on September 14, connecting Downtown Seattle with First Hill, Capitol Hill, Central District, and Madison Valley. Buses will arrive every six minutes during peak travel times on 1.4 miles of new dedicated bus lanes, with new 60-foot long, five-door buses that can load from curbside and center-running stations. This project was made possible by the voter-approved Levy to Move Seattle and close partnerships with local businesses and the community. Partner grants invested millions of dollars into fixing Seattle’s aging infrastructure while employing hundreds of residents with family-wage jobs. Thank you!
