Meet Dr. Blanche Sellers Lavizzo, a pediatric pioneer and Seattle Children’s leader. In 1956 Dr. Blanche Sellers Lavizzo opened her practice in Seattle’s Central District, becoming Washington state’s first Black female pediatrician, seeing patients in her office during the day and making house calls in the evenings. When the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic opened in 1970, she served as its first medical director, a role she held until her death in 1984. Her motto, “Quality care with dignity” became the motto of the clinic. Thank you to Dr. Lavizzo and all the incredible women who built Seattle Children’s since our founding in 1907. #WHM25 #WomensHistoryMonth

Meet Vanessa, a 14-year-old girl with a passion for racquetball. She faced a major obstacle when she was diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) along with a condition that caused her spine to curve as she grew, also known as anterior lumbar vertebral body tethering. Her diagnosis meant her spine needed a unique kind of ‘internal brace’ to help guide it into alignment. In 2023, Vanessa underwent surgery with Seattle Children’s expert orthopedic surgeon, Burt Yaszay, M.D. Both Vanessa and her care team at Seattle Children's South Clinic are thrilled to see her return to the racquetball court, stronger than ever.
