Yesterday, at the City of Seattle Seattle Police Department Before the Badge, Catriana Hernandez and Davonte Belle were very pleased to present information to thirteen (13!) police officer candidates about the Seattle CARE Department's two divisions, including the 9-1-1 Communications Center and the CARE Community Crisis Responder Team (aka: CARE Team), which work very closely with SPD to support the 9-1-1 dispatch of police resources and to handle a range of non-violent mental health crisis calls. Thank you, Cat and Davonte!

On June 26, 2024, Mayor Bruce Harrell introduced his proposal to expand the City of Seattle CARE Department's Community Crisis Responders (CCR) citywide, to assist the Seattle Police Department (SPD) with crisis calls and helping people with mental illness. Already in West and East Precincts, the CARE Team will soon be assisting SPD in North Precinct, and then South and Southwest Precincts. One of the resources the CARE Team utilizes to assist SPD is an electric American with Disabilities Act (ADA) van that increases capacity to safely transport multiple people with different accessibility needs (see photos below).

Congratulations to Cris, Sal, Jameelah, and Patrick, who’ve all worked incredibly hard these past 2-weeks learning how to dispatch police officers directly to 9-1-1 call events. They all passed their final exams and will be spending the next 10-weeks completing rigorous on-the-job training to further develop skillsets needed to dispatch police officers to calls throughout City of Seattle. We are so proud of you all and honored to have you as part of the team at the Seattle CARE Department 9-1-1 Communications Center.

Last week, an incredible team of Seattle CARE Department 9-1-1 Dispatchers was honored with the WA APCO-NENA Telecommunicator Team of the Year Award. Seattle CARE Department 9-1-1 Dispatchers seamlessly coordinated and communicated both internally and externally during a very challenging moment, to support SPD, SFD and other first responders in handling a major shooting incident in the Capitol Hill neighborhood during the early morning hours of July 23, 2023. The work these 9-1-1 Dispatchers did alongside Seattle Police Department and Seattle Fire Department, and other local agencies, helped save lives. As Tyler notes in the video, 9-1-1 Dispatchers are initial points of contact during emergency incidents in the City of Seattle--they are First First Responders--who serve the community alongside Seattle Police Department and Seattle Fire Department, albeit behind the scenes. Congratulations to Anne, Ashlee (not filmed), Malcolm (not filmed), Patrick, Sadie and Tyler for the recognition they have received in service to the community. This week our incredible team of 9-1-1 Dispatchers was honored and presented with the Team of the Year Award at the Washington State 9-1-1 Conference presented by?the Washington Chapter of APCO/NENA. Our team of 9-1-1 Dispatchers came together during a very challenging moment to handle a major shooting incident in Capitol Hill on July 23, 2023. Their teamwork and quick thinking were put to the ultimate test during a street racing takeover incident and subsequent mass shooting. They handled the situation with precision, ensuring victims were located swiftly and responders' safety remained paramount. Alongside the Washington Chapter of APCO/NENA, CARE recognizes their exemplary service and honors them for this award they’ve received. 9-1-1 Dispatchers are true heroes working behind the scenes alongside Seattle Police Department and Seattle Fire Department and we are so lucky to have them as part of our team! Congratulations to Patrick, Anne, Sadie, Tyler, and Malcolm (not pictured), and Ashlee (not pictured) for a job well done and their commitment to keeping the community safe!
