A few years ago, I used to get one call per week from someone looking to invest in making carbon credits from kelp forests. But wild kelp forests are probably the hardest ecosystem to quantify carbon sequestration to the level of scientific accuracy needed for a credible carbon offset. It is such a wild and dynamic ecosystem compared to stoic terrestrial ecosystems. So Seatrees started a research project with Dr. Jen Smith at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to conduct the key science needed to quantify the climate benefit of kelp forests (if any). Today, we released a video on this water-parting work that seeks to answer the most challenging problems in carbon flux through kelp forests.

Can kelp forests help reverse climate change? To support their recovery, this partnership is leveraging cutting-edge mobile imaging technology to improve restoration monitoring and scalability.
